Misleading gameplay description

[edit]

The gameplay description in the article says that in the Super Monkey Ball series, players control the world by tilting it rather than by controlling the characters themselves. While it is true that the player controls the world by tilting it, the implication that the player does not directly control their character is wrong. Even in the earliest games, players have a small amount of control of the monkey inside the ball. This can be confirmed by the fact that the player is able to control their monkey even in midair, which would not be possible if the only way of controlling the character is by tilting the world. This is a common misconception I see with these games, and I feel the way it's written now is reinforcing it. Should this section be rewritten to remove the implication that the player has no direct control over their character? Npbeaudette (talk) 17:57, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this bothers me as well. I agree it should be changed to say that while it is supposed to be perceived as tilting the stage, it technically still moves the monkey and the world titling is just a camera effect. (In fact, I think there is a setting to turn of the camera effect in SMB2's debug menu.) Cdde (talk) 01:36, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Character merge

[edit]

I'd like to put those back as it is normal to have some detail about the characters for a series somewhere. I don't object to the redirect as this article is too short to need a spinout, but I do think the information should be here. Thoughts anyone? Hobit (talk) 20:18, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Those summaries offer nothing to the reader. They are just junk that cannot possibly be rewritten. I really can't even tell if the plot points in them are real or fan made. TTN (talk) 20:58, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They certainly can be rewritten. Do you feel the characters in the series aren't relevant to the series? Hobit (talk) 00:15, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, those are literally complete trash that does not provide any context. I certainly do not object to someone witting summaries based upon the characters' personalities (as much a group of monkeys can have). TTN (talk) 15:34, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

– By this point the title has come to refer to the multi-title series and not the individual, original 2001 game. (A simple Google hit confirms this, with the whole front page about various titles of the series and not the original.) So I propose swapping the disambig onto the 2001 game and moving the series to the primary topic. czar  04:47, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Difficultly select

[edit]

In this game I call Master, Expert Extra Extra because Master cannot be entered from the difficulty select, and the only way to get there is having to go thru Expert and Expert Extra, so that's why I call Master as Expert Extra Extra, in Super Monkey Ball 2 you can start on Master.

Include Marketing/Simple Games as instalments?

[edit]

Should the marketing and spinoff games (SMB mini, SMB2 mini, SMB Disco, SMBBB mini etc.) be included in the list of games? They are smaller games, but some do seem to consider them instalments in the series. Cdde (talk) 01:41, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
