Older discussion

[edit]

The page seems to be a bit too much in in-universe style. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.74.219.30 (talk) 03:54, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Text from duplicate article Andorians (now a redirect):

Planet: Andoria. Humanoid Federation members are blue-skinned in appearance and have bilateral antennae and characteristically white hair. Andorians are self-described as a violent and warlike species.
Apparently, according to Data on stardate 43657.0, Andorians engage in group marriages of four as a rule. However, most of what is known about this race is scattered.

Missing Appearance

[edit]

I checked some of my DVR'd eposides of TOS off SciFi and found at least three Andorians. I dunno where to go get the eposide numbers, though. Hopefully someone else can fill those in. I have this impression that Andorians appeared a lot more but those are the only ones I could pick out. ---- Kutulu (sig added by Cburnett)

Starship Exeter's Epsilon Indi

[edit]

Even though it is a fan-film, I feel it is worth noting how Starship Exeter depicts Andorians. Their homeworld makes a prominent appearance in "The Savage Empire".DrWho42 00:40, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Marriage

[edit]
Andorian marriages consist of four individuals.

Is this canonical ? I don't remember any such claim in whole Enterprise, and Shran's relationship with Talas seems to suggest that they have two-person couples. Taw 18:40, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That was a concept introduced in the Deep Space Nine relaunch novels, before Enterprise began. It's been clearly contradicted by the TV series now, and of course as novel-only info it was never actually canon. Redxiv 11:45, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the four-person marriage comes from the Next Gen episode Data's Day, when Data lists various marriage customs from different cultures. The DS9 books were inspired by this to give the Andorians four sexes, which has not appeared in the series. Daibhid C 18:48, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ears

[edit]

"and were represented as having no ears, in favor of their large bony antennae located on the crown of the skull. However, this point was retconned in Enterprise."

This is wrong. Although Andorians in TOS were shown to have long hair, it was never said or implied that Andorians have no ears. The idea that they have no ears comes from several early novels. An Andorian with barely visible ears was seen in Star Trek The Motion Picture and the first Andorian with clearly visible ears was seen in Star Trek IV The Voyage Home.

First Contact

[edit]

Is it documented when first contact between humans and Andorians was made? MrZaiustalk 21:47, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Life on Andoria

[edit]

Andoria has now been canonically established as an icy moon orbiting a giant gas planet. Considering however that liquid water does not seem to be present on the surface of Andoria, how did life as we know it evolve there ? Is there liquid water underground ? Assuming all indigenous Andorian species actually evolved underground, wouldn't it be reasonable for them to have different sensory mechanisms, e.g. sonar or infrared thermal imaging, as opposed to visible light sight ? BTW, is there any light at all beneath the Andorian ice surface ? How would photosynthesis be possible in such an environment ?

Fair use rationale for Image:UFP Andor.png

[edit]

Image:UFP Andor.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Assessment

[edit]

I have added a quality assessment rating and importance rating to this article. Feel free to change them as the article improves! Also, feel free to add more issues to the list below, and strike them out (strike) when they're completed. — OranL (talk) 23:28, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notable issues

[edit]
  • The article needs more sources cited.
  • The section division may be unintuitive for readers, and may not conform to WP:MOS.

I reorganized the article so that it is no longer in-universe. I removed content about Andorian culture, and historical events that were only mentioned briefly mentioned, as opposed to being a major plot element. Nine hundred ninety-nine (talk) 20:29, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Since I removed a lot of text, I should say that the edit where I removed it is here: [1]. I am putting it here in case someone thinks some of the text should be reincorporated into the article, or if they want to use the information for something other than Wikipedia. Federation Founders

[edit]

I thought, and correct me if I am wrong, that there were five founding member races of the Federations. Humans (Earth), Andorians (Andor), Vulcans (Vulcan), Tellarites (Tellar), and Centaurians (Alpha Centauri). TheKnightlyOne —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.129.164.205 (talk) 04:52, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Zero Hour" gave the four founding members as humans, Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites. The Centauri system has never, as far as I know, been mentioned to have any inhabitants. The only time that I can think of in which that system was even mentioned in Trek was in Past Tense part I(DS9). Btw, new posts and sections go at the bottom, and please sign your posts. You can do this by typing four tildes (~~~~) at the end of them. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 16:23, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The information I was refering to came from the Star Trek Role Playing Game, which I am sure is not canon. I do know that Centauri is inhabited, follow link http://www.paoweb.com/gfmcenta.htm. I'm new to the discussion/editing part, didn't know how to sign. TheKnightlyOne (talk) 05:49, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, "Zero Hour" is canon, so it's pretty conclusive. I'm not even sure that link has anything to do with Trek, since it doesn't mention Trek, and the Federation is never called the "Galactic" Federation in Trek. The only inhabitant of Centauri that was ever seen was Zephram Cochrane in "Metamorphosis", and he was not a native, but a human who emigrated to that star system. He and the Companion lived alone on a planet in that system, with no indication that there were any other inhabitants. As for editing, don't sweat it; now you know. And if you need any further help or have questions about it, just drop me a line on the bottom of my Talk Page. Thanks. :-) Nightscream (talk) 17:42, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      • In the Wikipedia article on Zephram Cochrane, it says he "went lost" near Alpha Centauri in 2117. The planetoid with the Companion is not (necessarily) in the Alpha Centauri system -- indeed the dialogue makes is seem as if the characters believe they are lost or at least some other place far from where ZC went missing...at least a system or two away. Chesspride216.144.161.51 (talk) 20:05, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Part of the confusion over Centauri may be due to Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual, which for some reason does mention Centauri as a Federation member planet, even going to the extent of showing a variant official Star Fleet font with Greek characters for Star Fleet vessels crewed by Centauri. Star Fleet Technical Manual came out in 1975. There was at the time great confusion as to what was canon, and what was not - the Kzinti were introduced in the animated series, based on the "Kzin" in Larry Niven's "Known Space" novels (roughly at the same time that Star Trek:The Original Series came out, but independently of it). There was a non-canon ST:TOS novel set on Centauri, showing it settled by humans and being quite a bit larger and lusher than the planet in the ST:TOS episode "Metamorphosis". Patricia de Chenier (talk) 12:19, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

      • My recollection -- unchecked -- is that the first James Blish novelization (STAR TREK ONE) -- may have listed James T. Kirk as being from Alpha Centauri rather than Iowa. If Alpha Centauri is envisioned as an Earth colony than the four founding members makes more sense. Chesspride 216.144.161.51 (talk) 19:49, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

INSECTOID RACES

    • The Andorians cannot be the only "semi-insectoid" race in the Federation. The animated series episode JIHAD has an obvious green insectoid character (the one that picks locks). Some will say the animated series is not canon -- but it has contributed many, many things to the ST universe. Chesspride216.144.161.51 (talk) 19:54, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
