Biography section quality

[edit]

I've noticed that the biography section here is pretty lacking. It's more like a trivia section about the band than a real biography. I wish I could do more about this myself, but I barely know the band (I came here looking for more info, since wikipedia rarely ever fails me when I'm searching for info about a band). So I'm posting this in hopes that someone might see it and actually go out of their way to reformat and expand the biography section. I also would like to ask about where Metal-archives.com was discussed, because I'm interested in seeing what other people have to say about that site. I've always found their genre section to be very reliable in describing the genre of a band. Bobbias (talk) 11:38, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability dispute

[edit]

To whomever tagged this article: if you haven't heard of a band it doesn't necessarily mean the band is not notable. Arsis has released two albums on a notable indie label Willowtip Records (whose other artists include Misery Index, Ion Dissonance, Circle of Dead Children). According to its official website, the band has toured all over U.S. and will embark on another tour in January with God Forbid. I am removing the notability tag. - Quirk 09:54, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This stuff should really be in the article then. --Wafulz 16:40, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The discography is in the article. The albums alone should satisfy notability guidelines. - Quirk 17:18, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The albums need to be from a notable label as well. From the label's article, I didn't see any solid assertions of notability, which is why I figured putting on the notability tag would help resolve the issue. --Wafulz 17:41, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They recently signed a deal with Nuclear Blast Worldwide. [1] So the notablility issue is closed. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 146.235.66.52 (talkcontribs).

I don't know what kind of idiot would think Arsis is black metal, but stop putting it and citing your incorrect website. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.70.10.53 (talk) 20:11, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Van Dyne

[edit]

Mike has left the band to go back to school apparently.

Check their discussion board on SMN.....He hasn't responded for a while and used to keep the website up as well. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.41.13.194 (talk) 21:03, 12 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Arsis-logo.png

[edit]

Image:Arsis-logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 22:53, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Genre

[edit]

Whoever put black metal as a genre, your source is incorrect. Arsis has very little, if anything in common with black metal aside from James Malone's vocal style. I am removing that as the source cited is incorrect. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.70.10.53 (talk) 19:43, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Anonymous, but Wikipedia does not welcome personal opinions. Wikipedia does however welcome information cited from reliable sources and black metal was added with a reliable source. By the way, you can't cite metal-archives.com because it's not a reliable source, it's an open wiki that is very biased. --Leon Sword 00:11, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So ask the band or something, because they are quite clearly not a black metal band. Listen to "Transilvanian Hunger" by Darkthrone, then listen to "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" by Emperor, then listen to "A Celebration of Guilt" by Arsis and try to tell me they're the same genre. It should be removed for now, largely due to the fact that it is misleading, to say the least. I'll try to find a more reliable source, and the accuracy of your source should be investigated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.70.10.53 (talk) 00:39, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would also like to add that metal-archives is maintained by knowledgeable metal fans and should be allowed to be cited as a source for the genre of a band, seeing as how anyone can make a site and incorrectly label a band a certain (incorrect) genre. There is no way to control what a person puts on their own website, but since metal-archives is well-maintained, it should be permitted that it be used as a source. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.70.10.53 (talk) 00:57, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No metal-archives.com is NOT a reliable site. This very issue about the site's reliability has been discussed multiple times here on Wikipedia and consensus is that the site is definitely a questionable source. Rockdetector's credibility on the other hand has hardly ever been questioned. Rockdetector is only edited by the people that run the site and the bands whose biographies are on the site. If you truly believe Arsis is not black metal I will do another reliable source search and see what I come up with. --Leon Sword 01:18, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, my main grievance is the fact that Arsis don't call themselves a black metal band, as is verifiable by their myspace page. Their music features complex arrangements, frequent tempo/key changes (characteristic of death metal), (occasionally) disjointed rhythms (characteristic of death metal), scattered use of bridges (which is much more common in death metal than black metal), and highly frequent use of guitar solos (a rarity in black metal), among other things that I'm not really musically qualified to formally analyze that would separate them from black metal. It should be noted in the article that their music contains a small black metal influence, as is evident by James Malone's vocal style, but I don't think it should be put as a primary genre. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.70.10.53 (talk) 01:34, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's a reasonable argument and you're welcome to write up a section in the article talking about the band's musical style so long as it's cited from reliable sources. You can remove black metal from the infobox for now, but make sure to include it somewhere in the article. I wish I could settle this right now but it appears that I have got a virus and it's preventing me from doing anything except for brief periods of time. --Leon Sword 02:12, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added a brief description regarding their genre, I may move it to a different part of the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.70.10.53 (talk) 02:41, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just a few notes. I don't disagree that listing black metal as a primary genre categorization would be inappropriate, but I think removing all mention of it would be. You say guitar solos are a rare element of black metal music but I would tend to disagree, citing Immortal and even Mayhem as notable black metal bands which feature (some amount) of guitar solos, be it not extensive. Also, it was listed on the change history comments that "listen to In Flames [if you want a sense of what black metal consists of]". Perhaps In Flames' first few records may be classified as demonstrating a strong black metal vibe, the band's music in whole does not really classify as "black metal". And as for the band themselves not describing their music as containing "elements of black metal", even Chunk Schuldiner didn't call what he helped pioneer "death metal". Arsis' early work was originally described by having a slight black metal influence, and although their current sound may not reflect this element, I believe mention of it should be listed in this document for the sake of historical correctness. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.3.195.130 (talk) 07:33, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Associated acts

[edit]

Are these bands actually associated with this band or not? If most are their influences then they should be removed. FireCrystal (talk) 22:20, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure The Black Dahlia Murder is because Ryan Knight left Arsis to join them, but I don't think the other bands are related. I am looking on metal-archives.com to see if any of the members of Arsis have been in the other bands. This is what I have found: Their former drummer, David Kinkade, is in Malevolent Creation. Their former drummer, Alex Tomlin, is in Battlemaster. Crimson Mask, Daath, ThisMeansYou, and Monstrosity seem to be unrelated. Mason092 (talk) 23:05, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
