AstadiggajasAshtadiggajas – "Ashtadiggajas" is the correct way to pronounce it, and it even renders more G-hits than Astadiggajas. Kailash29792 (talk) 05:33, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

– The Ashtadiggajas refer to the Hindu mythological concept of eight elephants, referring to eight cardinal directions. This article refers to a group of historical individuals who served in the court of Krishnadevaraya. I believe a distinction is necessary. Chronikhiles (talk) 11:11, 2 October 2022 (UTC) From Talk:World_Elephant#Requested_move_3_October_2022: This article is about the eight elephants of Hindu cosmology, not the western motif of the World Elephant. • Oppose per unnecessary extra disambiguation since the nominator never stated where the subject of "the Hindu mythological concept of eight elephants, referring to eight cardinal directions" is located on Wikipedia. Is it currently an article, a section in an article, a draft article, or currently doesn't exist at all? Unfortunately, without this information, the status quo is correct. ...Ah, I see what happened now: See Talk:World Elephant#Requested move 3 October 2022. This discussion probably needs to be converted to a multi-move request so the discussion can be properly followed. In fact, I conditional oppose this move unless it is converted into a multi-move request for clarity. Steel1943 (talk) 15:12, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Struck out part that no longer applies. Steel1943 (talk) 06:04, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comment. Just realized another possible issue with this move request: @Chronikhiles: Are you requesting World Elephant be moved to Astadiggajas or Ashtadiggajas? Steel1943 (talk) 16:07, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Without the h would be more accurate in my opinion. The Sanskrit transliteration of the term doesn't have the h, which I realised after requesting the article move on the presently existing Ashtadiggajas article. I apologise for this goof. As far as both of these articles are concerned, my goal is requesting any kind of change, as long as there exists a distinction between them, and the presently titled "World Elephant" article is renamed. Chronikhiles (talk) 16:16, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Chronikhiles: That makes more sense. I suppose I have one more question/concern that will help participants and closers understand why/if this move request should proposed: Are you also stating that Ashtadiggajas (with an "h") should be a redirect targeting World Elephant/Astadiggajas (no "h") after these moves are performed? Steel1943 (talk) 16:30, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The present Ashtadiggajas might as well remain as it is now, since there is a one letter distinction between the titles of the court members and the Hindu mythological concept. As long as there's a "not to be confused with" template at the beginning of both articles, I think that this would be appropriate. For everyone's clarity on my rationale:Ashtadiggajas need not be moved to Ashtadiggajas (Vijayanagara), but I would still like to see World Elephant be moved to Astadiggajas. Chronikhiles (talk) 03:26, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, sounds like you are claiming the inclusion or exclusion of the "h" in the titles refers to two distinct topics. (I hope this all clarifies what is going on with this discussion for the benefit of any future participants and the discussion closer ... though I'm going to ultimately be neutral since I have no idea where I stand on this.) Steel1943 (talk) 06:04, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Steel1943 They are two distinct topics, you may refer to the two definitions here for clarity if you're interested: The Hindu mythological elephants, and the historical members of an Indian court. They are not rendered differently in common parlance, but for the sake of accuracy, I propose that the World Elephant article be renamed Astadiggajas, the accurate transliteration of the Sanskrit term, while the presently existing Ashtadiggajas, with the h, be left as is. Chronikhiles (talk) 16:56, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Chronikhiles: I don't think I was clear in what I meant by my previous statement. I mean that per the above, my understanding is one subject is presumably referred to as "Astadiggajas" (no "h") and the other one can be referred to as "Ashtadiggajas" (has an "h"), and the claim is that this difference in spelling between the two subjects is distinct enough where readers would not be searching "Ashtadiggajas" (no "h") trying to locate "Ashtadiggajas" (has an "h") or vice versa? (See WP:SMALLDETAILS.) Steel1943 (talk) 17:40, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe this would lead to much confusion, no, but I still do wish to add "not to be confused with" template at the beginning of both articles to prevent the small likelihood of such. Chronikhiles (talk) 05:01, 13 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
