Hazards

[edit]

2/22/2022: Hazards UPDATE: The first ever recorded mountain lion attack in the Santa Monica mountains happened on August 28th, 2021, when a 65lb male mountain lion mauled a 5 year old boy in the Monte Nido neighborhood of Malibu California. https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/08/28/mountain-lion-killed-after-mauling-5-year-old-in-santa-monica-mountains/#:~:text=A%205%2Dyear%2Dold%20boy,of%20Fish%20and%20Wildlife%20reported.&text=Believing%20it%20was%20the%20attacking,it%2C%20the%20wildlife%20agency%20said. I am reentering "Mountain Lions" into hazards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.157.92.114 (talk) 18:59, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Added heatstroke and Lyme Disease as hazards. Fatal heat stroke has become so common it has prompted authorities to close all trails in the area on several occasions. https://abc7.com/malibu-trail-santa-monica-mountains-trails-heat/6411525/

Also, Lyme Disease carrying ticks have been found consistently in the area since 2006 and it is considered endemic. https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/lyme-disease-carrying-ticks-found-lurking-in-new-areas-in-santa-monica-mountains/2059754/#:~:text=Lyme%20disease%2Dcarrying%20ticks%20have,released%20by%20vector%20control%20officials.

I also propose removing Mountain Lions as a hazard. I can find no recorded attack on a human by a mountain lion in the Santa Monica mountains with records dating back to 1890. http://tchester.org/sgm/lists/lion_attacks_ca.html https://www.wideopenspaces.com/list-of-fatal-mountain-lion-attacks-in-north-america/ https://wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Mammals/Mountain-Lion/Attacks

Same thing with venomous snakes. Although rattlesnakes are very common, fatal bites in the area are so rare I can find no recorded evidence of any in the region. https://nhm.org/stories/misplaced-fears-rattlesnakes-are-not-dangerous-ladders-trees-dogs-or-large-tvs — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.157.78.126 (talk) 19:45, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
