Early life and career

[edit]

The musician known to the world as Bo Diddley was born in McComb, Mississippi, as Ellas Otha Bates[1] in 1928. He was adopted in infancy and raised by his mother's cousin, Gussie McDaniel, and assumed his adoptive father's surname, becoming Ellas McDaniel. Though he later adopted the stage name "Bo Diddley", he was formally known as Ellas McDaniel throughout his life; all his musical compositions, for instance, were credited to Ellas McDaniel (although record companies would often incorrectly list the composer name as "McDaniels").

Later years

Over the decades, Bo Diddley's venues ranged from intimate clubs to stadiums.
