Map place names

[edit]

The OSM map added by MB currently uses the standard base map, which comes with lots of local-language script names, which may not be all that helpful to an English language article. You may therefore be interested that there is now an option to turn off all the base-map place names, by adding a setting of nolabels = 1 within the map template. You would then probably want to manually add the various country names (using mark-size=0 for the relevant marks, so only the name appears). I am aware that simply naming countries can be a fraught issue in the region, but if there is an consensus way of showing what is wanted, someone could give it a go, or I would be happy to help get it looking good. Or if the local, OSM generated local-script names are preferable I am happy to leave well alone. RobinLeicester (talk) 01:08, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

RobinLeicester, I'm not sure it's worth the effort of manually labeling the countries. I think the current map is OK. Any plans to get the OSM maps to only use English language names (in en.wp). That seems like a better long-term solution. I added a map in Qit'at Jaradah and that would benefit from English names more than this one! MB 01:49, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
MB, there seemed to be a difficulty in achieving English throughout, but it was not clear if the problem was with Open Street Map or with the wikimedia implementation. There is various mentions of this at [1] but only the nolabels option made it before the developers were re-focussed onto other projects, so at least for the time being, this is what we have. I will have a look at Qit'at Jaradah. RobinLeicester (talk) 01:03, 23 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
