'Shell script' (sankhalipi)

[edit]

Hummingbird would like to know how the Candi of Indonesia, and transmission of Tantra and Vajrayana are related to 'shell script' (sankhalipi):

Short inscriptions in a peculiar highly ornate undeciphered script (Photo 2), known as ‘shell characters’ or sankhalipi because of a resemblance of the letters to a conch shell (sankha), are found at many archaeological sites in and around India and in Java and Borneo (Salomon 1983a, b). This script is often assumed to be a Brahmi derivative, and various claims to its decipherment have been made and dismissed. As Salomon observes, if it is Brahmi-derived, it has diverged so far from the normal pattern as to be effectively a new script family. Source: [1]
