Too many articles

[edit]

We should not be creating articles on every single store, as they do not pass WP:CORP. --Elonka 04:07, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Er, we're not? Rebecca 04:46, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can you please point me to any discussion that shows that articles that are about a commercial enterprise, with no references beyond the company's own website, do pass WP:CORP? --Elonka 04:56, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, I thought you were talking about individual outlets. On the other hand, if you're seriously contending that Australia's largest department store chain, a listed multi-billion dollar enterprise and major employer, isn't notable, then I'd seriously wonder why I'm trying to reason with you at all. Rebecca 05:01, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
May I encourage you to please re-read WP:CIVIL, as I am finding your communication style quite confrontational. And no, I'm not talking about the chain, which I agree is notable. I'm talking about the individual stores, which in most cases seem to have no references aside from the store's own website. To my knowledge, this does not pass WP:CORP, unless there is some discussion that I am unaware of? --Elonka 05:05, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There arent links to individual store articles. those are links to the CITIES the stores are in. CITIES are allowed to have wikipedia entries. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.7.198.245 (talkcontribs) 23:09, October 30, 2006
What the unsigned editor said. Rebecca 05:10, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually no. TO be precise they link to the shopping centres the stores are in. --Merbabu 05:18, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So Claremont is a shopping center now? kidding aside, some on the page are shopping centers, others are popular shopping areas or streets, and a few are malls. Times Square in NY has an article too. So does the Mall of America. No one has ever complained about those, which arent that different from what this article links to. And why make a big fuss at THIS article about it? shouldnt the complaints be posted at the pages of the shopping centers, and not at pages that link to it? This isnt logical at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.7.198.245 (talkcontribs) 23:27, October 30, 2006
I was just correcting the facts as I saw them, rather than commenting on the discussion. I couldn't actually care less whether shopping centres are in or out. There are more important things to do. ;-) --Merbabu 05:41, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you dont care about the issue at hand, or the final decision that is reached as a result of it, there's really no reason for you to take part in the discussion, is there? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.7.198.245 (talkcontribs) 23:46, October 30, 2006
lol - I don't want to see people wasting their time discussing incorrect facts. I can't help but help. ;-). --Merbabu 05:49, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unlikely/unsupported new stores

[edit]

It is simply not true to say that David Jones stores are planned to open in Indooroopilly, Cairns, Frankston, cannington, Rockingham, Darwin and Hobart. Come on - I mean, Darwin?! There is no support for these claims and the references should be deleted. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 203.9.200.3 (talk) 06:22, 10 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Stores Listing

[edit]

Wikipedia is not a directory and this page should not become a listing of stores. Whoever keeps adding this info (Mr Jones?) please don't. Nomadtales 10:37, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I know that you meant well when editing the DJ's page and removing stores. However-if you note most other department store listings on wikipedia-take note on US stores such as Bloomingdales and macy*s, they also have "directories" as you call them. This IS factual informationthat I continuosly place on the DJ's page. It is a fundamental part of what DJ's is-in actual fact-it IS what DJ's is.Please stop removing store listings-they are what is known as David Jones. (Unsigned, 121.209.200.67)
  • (the above was copied from my talk page) As I said before Wikipedia is not a directory and I will point you to WP:NOT#DIR and you should read the bit where it says "Wikipedia is not the white pages." and "... or a resource for conducting business.". Nomadtales 23:01, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I know wikipedia isn't the white pages-but the fact still remains-lets take it back to basics...

What is DJ's? A department store What is the fundamental part of the DJ's brand? Its stores Therefore, what should be elaborated on, with regard to what it is, on the DJ's page? Its stores.I leave you with that...

  • I agree that the stores should be shown for the David Jones article. I dont see how it is any more so a "resource for conducting business" than the page itself? Doesnt the existence of the article help DJs to conduct business by giving it publicity? I think a listing of suburbs with DJs stores would be acceptable. Phone numbers or street addresses would not be acceptable. 203.194.4.63 13:04, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Check some comparable Wikipedia pages. Myer may have a stores listing (it shouldn't) but check some other department store pages: Neiman Marcus - no stores listing. Saks Fifth Avenue - no stores listing. Marks and Spencer - no stores listing. JCPenney - no stores listing. The stores information is not encyclopedic and should not be included. Especially since much of it (ew stores etc) is unverifiable and just conjecture. A store directory is clearly the type of information available at the DJs website, which is linked here.
  • I dont see how it is any less encyclopedic than listing songs released by a singer, episodes of a television show, or locations of westifeld shopping centres - this even has its own page. All this information could be accessed on the respective websites too. Perhaps if we created a separate page of DJs stores and then linked to it in a similar manner to what is done on the Westfield Group page.
Maintaining a listing of every DJs retail outlet is nonsense. What next? List every McDonald's in the world? ... WWGB 12:23, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Since DJs is described in this article as being an upmarket department store, to give the reader an impression of this we could have a small sample of suburbs which have a DJs store (not the current exhaustive format). I think it would help the readers understanding to see where DJs locates its stores - usually in more upmarket areas.

Fair use rationale for Image:Davidjoneslogo.gif

[edit]

Image:Davidjoneslogo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 00:47, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Added. Lankiveil 13:35, 13 June 2007 (UTC).[reply]

What does this sentence mean?

[edit]

"Most clients are of socio-economic A & B group". Okay, I can make a guess, but it appears without any real context in the middle of the article as to what these groups are. Lankiveil 13:32, 13 June 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Food hall

[edit]

The David Jones food hall is no longer known as Food Glorious Food - and has not been for many years. Old signage with the 'Food Glorious Food' branding may still exist in some stores, but the flagship food halls, being most recently renovated (Market St, Bourke St, Bondi Junction, Hay Street Mall) are simply branded as "Foodhall".

Aherns

[edit]

Just an omission, and one I don't have the background knowledge to source - David Jones acquired the Aherns chain of stores in Perth (which were Myer's main rival in Perth) to establish a presence in Perth in (I'm guessing) about 2001 or 2002 (this primary-sourced article announces the decision in 1999 [1] but seemed to imply a much later opening date, and I remember shopping at Aherns in 2000-01). Prior to that they had no WA presence. Anyone want to have a go at looking that up and putting it in in an appropriate place? :) Orderinchaos 13:18, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

David Jones card

[edit]

Given that a large percentage of the company's profits, as well as recent high profile media attention to the 'outsourcing' of the DJs card to major banks, is it worth adding something on this particular part of the business to the article? 60.241.179.94 14:16, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As long as it doesn't sound like and advert for the card, I'm fine for a mention. Michellecrisp 02:38, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Have added same, spurred by AFR article on Aust retailers and banks Murtoa (talk) 00:16, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

David Jones similar to Neiman Marcus?

[edit]

Maybe in David Jones' dreams, reality no. I shuttle between the USA and Australia frequently and I would put DJ's on par with Bloomingdales, definately not Neiman Marcus. 70.173.122.123 (talk) 22:40, 30 December 2007 (UTC)Alex[reply]

Suggested restructure

[edit]

I think the article could benefit by having a "History" section early on, rather than leading with the "Business longevity" section which essentially covers performance since the last 1990s. At present there are bits relevant to history among the "stores" section, which could be consolidated into a chronology of how the company has developed. There are also some significant gaps on, say, ownership (eg the Adelaide Steamship days in the 1980s). Murtoa (talk) 06:37, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

history

[edit]

hi, i removed the following text from the article today:

In recent times, a slowdown in the upscale department store market has hurt both David Jones and its chief competitor, Myer (formerly part of the Coles Myer group, now renamed the Coles Group). The separation and public float of the department store assets in 1995 resulted in structural and cultural changes which saw periods of stagnancy and high staff turnover. Shares initially offered at A$2 fell as low as A$0.90, but have since reached highs of over A$4.50 (prior to the 2008 "Global Financial Crisis").

It has weathered and grown strong from the massive shift in Australian retailing away from department stores towards specialist retailers and suburban shopping malls. Myer — Australia's largest department store — has also demonstrated its ability to change with the times, especially since its sale from former parent company (Coles Myer) to a partnerhsip between private equity group TPG Newbridge, and the Myer family. Since the sale, Myer has experienced a dramatic turnaround and is now more profitable than at any other point in its history.

it was in a section called "Business longevity", whatever that means, and it is all about Myer - not about DJs at all! So it's here now in case some one feels it's desperately important to have detailed info about another company's history on this page. Cheers, --Amaher (talk) 12:25, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stores section

[edit]

I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks about the stores and closed stores sections in comparisions to WP:NOTDIRECTORY. I feel this section does nothing to add to the matieralness of the article and feel the infomation may better be expressed just as well as prose.

I also would like to refer to AfD, which I originally nominated as Punk Boi 8 a bit over 3 years ago.

I personally think the list fails NOTDIR criteria 4, as the list is nothing more than a list of store locations with no referncing to opening dates. Furthermore, many of the individual stores may not be notable beyond their opening, and may not recieve ongoing WP:RS coverage beyond their opening - save for the flagship stores, which may be worth keeping as prose, but certainly not every store.

Thanks -- sandgemADDICT yeah? 19:44, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the store list and will place them here in a subpage of this talk page. This was a WP:BB decision as I started the above discussion a month ago and have recieved no reply. I will paste the remvoed content into a subpage and draw attention via WP:AUS to the discussion. -- sandgemADDICT yeah? 05:18, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have again removed the list which has been re-added sometime between now and 2012.Ajf773 (talk) 21:04, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oldest dept store still trading under its own name

[edit]

Much as I am a fan of DJs... I'm not sure if this is correct, as the oldest department store is "Le Bon Marché" which was started in 1856, and is still going, in the same building. Deathlibrarian (talk) 05:01, 30 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
