This page is just an image, does anyone know enough about Elisha Kent Kane to write atleast a stub article. SimonMayer 03:16 31 Jan 2004 (GMT/UTC)

The article expansion

[edit]

Glad to see expansion, and in areas I am not in touch with. I added the second image, and it was fixed by its source, and I will get back to more on the Arctic part. --Dumarest (talk) 20:39, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Happy to be a part of it! I am an enormous admirer of Dr. Kane, but would caution that we should work together to make sure the entry is balanced; we don't want a hagiography, after all. Among the issues that probably ought to be covered here are Dr. Kane's dealings with the dissenters aboard the Advance, particularly Godfrey, whom he treated quite badly, I think. Also there is his liaison with Margaret Fox, one of the notorious "rapping" psychics the Fox sisters, with whom he may have had a sort of love affair or even marriage (accounts differ, and Elisha's father Judge Kane burned everything he could find that had to do with Margaret after Elisha's death). At the same time, so much is admirable! His early death and funeral moved the nation profoundly.
I have a library of about 1,000 Arctic books here at my disposal, and stand ready to contribute! All best, Clevelander96 (talk) 23:54, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Elisha Kane collection

[edit]

Recent edit added links to an Elisha Kane collection, and those links were removed by another. Why?? Seems to me that the link is relevant and good. --Dumarest (talk) 15:38, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you follow that link, all you get is a statement that the library has .25 (1/4 foot) of Kane materials. There's no finding aid, no index, no details, so the link's not very useful. However, the largest collection of Kane materials in the world is held by the American Philosophical Society's library, with a finding aid here that's quite extensive, and we already have a link to it, I see. So though I didn't delete the other link, I don't think it's an especially useful one. Clevelander96 (talk) 15:51, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Point well taken. I should have clicked it before I jumped to conclusions. --Dumarest (talk) 19:23, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Errant "ERROR" message

[edit]

Can anyone explain why "ERROR" appears in the person box here after the place of burial? The information is correct; the infobox seems correctly formatted, and when I attempt to edit the information I don't see the word "ERROR" anywhere -- is this being inserted by some weird wiki script or something? Find a Grave reference

[edit]

2 1/2 years ago there were comments of "access to 1,000 Arctic books", and "...the largest collection of Kane materials in the world...". This article is associated with 4 projects and yet with all this the references suck and there is use of a reference considered unreliable. The error was in the coordinates. I added it as a reference and someone can fix it. Otr500 (talk) 23:02, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Margaret Fox

[edit]

I've rewritten this. The sources disagree over whether Kane and Fox were actually married or not. I provided a reference link to a blog post out of laziness, but the blog post itself lists numerous sources, which I do not have time for now to look up.

I removed details that are not especially Kane-specific. For example, the fringe nature of spirit rapping, or which sister was dominant, and the like. A book biography would digress on these issues. Here, we provide links.

As it is, the write up I've given is clumsy, because the events happened in a timeline that does not mesh with the simple timeline of his other activities. Choor monster (talk) 14:06, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
