Proposal to delete

Another editor suggested deletion (WP:AFD), stating, "there are no other pages about state extremes except for Massachusetts, and there is already Extreme points of U.S. states."—Markles 20:50, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Weak oppose. I think it's not a well-crafted article, but it has more information than Extreme points of U.S. states. I suggest finding better ways to expand this article OR transferring its additional data to Extreme points of U.S. states. —Markles 20:50, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think that adding a highest point and lowest point column to the Extreme points of U.S. states would be best, as northernmost, southernmost, easternmost, and westernmost are not the only extremes. Then, this info could be transfered there. ^Pepper∙_piggle 22:28, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Strong oppose to deletion. I never like to think about deleting an article with important useful, and/or informative information. I find it amazing how the use of the English Language is sometime manipulated to show a negative. The statement, "there are no other pages about state extremes except for Extreme points of Massachusetts ", means there is in fact at least one other state and the more correct term would be there is only one other state.... If this was a criteria to delete Wikipedia could not have made it past the first day. The fact that there is an article with a more appropriate heading is grounds to find a resolution.
I have three full plates(obligations) to add yet another so I do have observations, questions, a suggestion, and conclusion. Those that are warranted please consider and those that are not can be disregarded.

Observations:

1)- The info box is far better set up in this article than Extreme points of U.S. states with far more information availability and is a good infobox but as stated above "...Not a well-crafted article", and certainly not as a stand-alone.
2)- Like it or not, from a neutral point of view, an article about "Extreme points" in a particular state would fall directly under the heading of Extreme points of U.S. states.
3)- Information gathered that would make one article more complete should not be separated, especially if a possible conclusion would be 50 or more independant articles, plus the main article that would probably then be a candidate for deletion as either being redundant or lacking. Then there is the possibility, at a point, of adding U.S. possessions. At that point the article size might make separation warranted.

Questions:

1)- Why a request to delete instead of a request to merge?
2)- Why would there not be an automatic consensus of something that makes sense?

Suggestion:

Merge and use the template as a building block for the other states for conformity.

Conclusion:

The evidence surely suggests that merging would be appropriate and deletion unnecessary and a disservice to those seeking knowledge. Merging the article concerning Massachusetts would also be warranted. Otr500 (talk) 05:47, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose – I now see that the article really doesn't have a reason for deletion, but a merge... I don't think that would be necessary either. If this article can be thoroughly cleaned up, and if quite a few more of these pages about state extremes could be made (perhaps more so about pages with interesting extremes), then I think this whole extremes thing will be fine. I know it seems like I changed my mind, and I have. Otr500 successful turned me against my own deletion tagging.

@Otr500, 1., because I thought that these extremely fine details were not exactly encyclopedic, (WP:! states that Wikipedia is not an excessive listing of statistics) and 2., because not all people will think something makes sense, even if you think it does. As a crude example of this, if one person in serious depression decides to jump off a brindge because it would make his life better to die, would other people think he was insane? Probably; but he did not think that.

Merge suggestion

I added a merge suggestion in lieu of a request for deletion. I will do the same for Extreme points of Massachusetts. This should stave of a delete request until consensus is allowed. Otr500 (talk) 06:21, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
