– FIU is less descriptive than Florida International. ESPN uses "Florida International" ([1] and [2]). Jweiss11 (talk) 14:15, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Keep The FIU student body, alumni and administration refer to the university as "FIU", never as "Florida International". ESPN does use "Florida International", however, they just as often use "FIU". For example: http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/2229/florida-international-golden-panthers --Comayagua99 (talk) 22:01, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As I have argued elsewhere, e.g. Talk:Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns, structural listings at places like ESPN should trump usage in prose where alternate and abbreviated names may have conditional utility. Jweiss11 (talk) 17:00, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The listings at NCAA should, I believe, be the guide for this and they use never refer to the team as Florida International.--Rabbethan 22:59, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Move per nom. I understand Comayagua's argument, because colloquially the term "FIU" is used, but in encyclopedic prose the title of the article should be more descriptive. FIU won't mean much to anyone not aware of American college athletics. In the article itself, "FIU" can be used once the full institution name is mentioned (i.e. – "blah blah Florida International University (FIU) blah blah..."). Keep FIU does not refer to itself "Florida International" and all of the media in South Florida refers to it as "FIU". The NCAA website refers to the school either as "Florida International University" or "FIU", never "Florida International".--Rabbethan 22:59, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Move it's not what you call yourself that counts, its what others call you. For example, is it Abe or Abraham Lincoln?--Paul McDonald (talk) 14:57, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
