On September 30, she arrived back in Cherbourg, after leaving the remains of the Emperor in Le Havre.

Correction of error

[edit]

The earlier text said: "On September 30, she arrived back in Cherbourg, after leaving the remains of the Emperor in Le Havre." I have seen this same description elsewhere on the Internet, but it is incorrect, both as to date and place. In fact, the photo at the upper right of the article shows the transfer of the coffin to the steamship Normandie at Cherbourg, according to its own caption (shown in French if you view the enlarged photo). The facts are, La Belle Poule returned to France from Sainte Helena, moored at Cherbourg on 30 November 1840, and on 8 December transferred the coffin to the steamship Normandie. Normandie then transported the body to Le Havre and then up the Seine to Rouen where it was transferred to a smaller ship for the remaining voyage to Paris.Tvbanfield (talk) 05:34, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
