Agent Orange

[edit]

As Veterans' Affairs Committee chairman, Montgomery led opposition to the Kerry- Daschle bill (Agent Orange Disabilities Act of 1987, S.1787)that would have required the VA to begin compensating veterans who contracted non-Hodgkins lymphoma and lung cancer a presumed service-connected disease. Montgomery asserted that "further studies were needed to prove a connection between various diseases and Agent Orange before the government should be held liable for disability benefits" despite several such JAMA published studies by the National Cancer Institute and the VA and one by the New Jersey Agent Orange Commission. • "Gillespie V. Montgomery" Mississippi: 6.3k

Additionally on Google, "Rep. Sonny Montgomery" Mississippi returns 2.4k results, and "Rep. G.V. Also, searching the Vanderbilt Television News Archive [2] shows that TV networks used "Sonny Montgomery" during his political career as early as 1977 until his passing in 2006. In contrast, the last use of "G.V. Montgomery" in a network newscast (usually in the text chyrons) was in 1989.

The archives of Mississippi's largest newspaper The Clarion-Ledger show over 9,600 uses of "Sonny Montgomery" compared to 820+ for "G.V. Montgomery" and fewer than 80 for "Gillespie Montgomery" or "Gillespie V. Montgomery".

Then-President George W. Bush referred to him as "Sonny" during a 2002 speech [3].

The 2006 Associated Press obituary of Montgomery used "Gillespie V. Montgomery" in the headline but in its opening paragraph made sure to include "Sonny". The New York Times used included "Sonny" in its obit headline [4]. Arbor to SJ (talk) 00:35, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
