Requested move 14 August 2019

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: MOVED per WP:COMMONNAME, though this is different than the freeway named after him, or perhaps even convention in Western Australia. No consensus to have both Graham and Polly in the title e.g. Graham (Polly) Farmer —Bagumba (talk) 08:39, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Graham FarmerPolly Farmer – Clear WP:COMMONNAME. Overwhelmingly known and referred to as "Polly" in reliable sources. Mattinbgn (talk) 03:03, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support Per nomination above. I have never understood why the current name was used for this article. The article tells us he has been known as Polly since he was six years old, and that was the only name this avid, mature aged Geelong fan ever heard him called during his football career. HiLo48 (talk) 03:24, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Based on a quick review, Polly Farmer appears to be the common name. Hrodvarsson (talk) 04:52, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • In Western Australia where he came from there is a freeway Graham Farmer Freeway as a consequence there is a formalised version of his name in the landscape... as a consequence this change must be for people not from WA, as we would leave it alone... JarrahTree 05:38, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That freeway includes the informally named "Polly Pipe". Mitch Ames (talk) 10:01, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I remember when he came to Geelong from East Perth. Right from the start he was known at Geelong as Polly. I never learnt his real name until years later. That suggests the majority of footballing people in Perth must have called him Polly. The article tells us he has been known as Polly since he was six years old, and that was in Perth. HiLo48 (talk) 06:13, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This high quality source says "(Gareth) Andrews said that Polly – as he was forever known..." I would suggest that the choice of name of the freeway was more one typical of the commonly conservative government that Western Australians seem inclined to elect rather than a true reflection of Polly's common name. He was known simply as Polly when he first came from Perth to Geelong to play footy, and ever since. HiLo48 (talk) 06:36, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You're quoting from The Age, a Victorian newspaper. Farmer lived almost all of his life, and played most of his football, in WA. In that state, particularly in recent years, he was most commonly referred to, including by the man himself, as Graham Farmer, or as Graham 'Polly' Farmer. That practice has been followed not only by the government that named the Perth freeway, but also by the WA media outlets, and by the ABC and The Australian, in reporting his death. Why should a perceived preference in Victoria prevail? Bahnfrend (talk) 13:37, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We never use such constructions as Graham (Polly) Farmer for article names. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:19, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I don't feel qualified to say whether this page ought to be moved, but anyone concerned that calling the page Polly Farmer is disrespectful or cheapening might like to consider Lumpy Stevens, born exactly 200 years before Farmer. A mere cricketer, I know, and I dare say his mother called him "Edward", but known then and still remembered as "Lumpy". PaulBetteridge (talk) 10:09, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Get Polly and Aussie Rules on Wikipedia's Main page

[edit]

I have nominated Polly Farmer's death to be an item in the In the news section of Wikipedia's Main page. It is common for Australian nominations to fail simply through lack of interest, and hence support at the appropriate place, which is Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates. Please help get Polly and Aussie Rules on Wikipedia's Main page by adding your support there, and helping fix any issues found to be needing to be addressed. HiLo48 (talk) 03:55, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey HiLo48 great idea. Think the picture of Polly needs to be changed. A tiny blurry photo from 1954?! He deserves much better! MaskedSinger (talk) 16:15, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you can find a pic that fits Wikipedia's rules, go for it. HiLo48 (talk) 06:25, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks everyone. We got Polly on the Main page! HiLo48 (talk) 06:25, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Kevin Bartlett

[edit]

Going back through all of this article's history it seems that whatever it was that Kevin Bartlett is supposed to have said has never been inserted into the text. Can anyone remedy this deficit? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:8003:22ED:E600:C155:E2FA:5ED8:1F90 (talk) 22:24, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've now deleted this until it gets fixed. The original text was as follows: "Richmond rover Kevin Bartlett, who roomed with Farmer on the 1968 tour of Ireland, s"
It seems maybe some text was accidentally deleted, but I can't find an existing edit that has it, so I've deleted it unless an editor wants to resolve this.

Polly Farmer Medal

[edit]

This page mentions that Shaun Burgoyne won the Polly Farmer Medal at the 2015 Indigenous All-Stars Game. I'm assuming that medal is awarded to best and fairest in that pre-season match of players of Indigenous descent, but does anyone know for sure ... with citations? If so, could you add a section to this page about this medal?

Not even his Bio for induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame says anything about this medal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:283:4F81:4B00:BC24:23DA:6770:6BC0 (talk) 20:49, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The medal is explained just before the end of the lead of this article - Indigenous All-Stars (Australian rules football). It's described as being for "The best on ground for the Indigenous All-Stars". HiLo48 (talk) 00:36, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
