Greg HsuGreg Han – Hi, I might need help. The subject's name on social media platforms is 'Greg Han'. His Facebook is at https://zh-tw.facebook.com/GregHan1031. His Weibo is at https://weibo.com/u/5714943066. His Chinese Wikipedia is at https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/%E8%A8%B1%E5%85%89%E6%BC%A2. On 2017, his Chinese Wikipedia was created and his English name was shown as 'Hsu Greg Han'. On 2019, his English Wikipedia was created and his English name was shown as 'Greg Hsu'. On 2020, the page 'Greg Han' was redirected to 'Greg Hsu'. The subject's name is better to be consistent on social media platforms and Wikipedia. His name in Wikipedia is better to be 'Greg Han', and his other name in infobox is 'Greg Hsu'. Also the page 'Greg Hsu' is better to be redirected to 'Greg Han'. Thank you very much for your time and help. Have a great day! A reliable source in English that uses "Greg Hsu" is Taipei Times [1] [2]. Are there reliable sources in English that call him "Greg Han"? (Taipei Times never does, according to a google search of their domain). As his last name is "Hsu", not "Han", I'm inclined to oppose the move unless there are sources. —Kusma (talk) 12:48, 25 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Kusma, Good morning. Thanks for your time and help. Could you read Chinese character? If yes, may I discuss this issue with you in Chinese character? Thank you very much again! Have a nice day! Doedoeneoneo (talk) 12:30, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This is another source in English using "Greg Hsu": [3] (Straits Times). @Doedoeneoneo: 我看得懂漢字,但是其他使用者大部分看不懂,所以我們應該用英文。 (I can read Chinese characters, but most other users here can't, so we should use English). —Kusma (talk) 13:07, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Kusma, very sorry for the late reply. Thank you very much for this. Please give me a few more days. Thanks again! Have a nice evening! Doedoeneoneo (talk) 11:52, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Kusma, truly sorry for the late reply. Found this Wikipedia:Article titles. We could reference it and discuss the three issues here.
(1) "reliable source". I am thinking that all the reliable sources might reference his wiki title "Greg Hsu" created in 2019. In WP:Article titles, there is a different point of view. It mentions that "Ambiguous or inaccurate names for the article subject, as determined in reliable sources, are often avoided even though they may be more frequently used by reliable sources.".
(2) "common name". In WP:Article titles, it mentions that "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's official name as an article title; it generally prefers the name that is most commonly used". This subject's common name is "Greg Han" and it is shown in his official Facebook, Weibo, Youtube and his self-titled debut album.
(3) "stage name". Found some article titles show stage names without last name, like Lady Gaga, MC Hammer, Vin Diesel, Bono, Lily James, Eminem and Doja Cat.
"Greg Han" is this subject's common name and stage name. It will be nicer to move the current title to "Greg Han". Thank you very much again for your time and help. Have a great evening! Doedoeneoneo (talk) 09:16, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
His Chinese name 许 光汉 in Pinyin is Xǔ Guāng-hàn. I think when he writes his name on social media as "Greg Han", he means this as an anglicization of just his personal name, Guāng-hàn, not his whole name, as "Han" sounds nothing like . That his name is written on this poster for A Sun as "Greg-han Xu" lends further weight to this.
It appears that the Roman-character name he uses professionally for acting is Greg Hsu, as it can be seen on posters for My Love and on Netflix. This seems to be based on the first syllable of his personal name and his family name, as "Hsu" sounds like .
However, the cover artwork of his music releases and Apple Music consistently write his name in Roman characters as Greg Han, based on just his personal name.
Therefore, I think both Greg Hsu and Greg Han need to be mentioned in bold in the article's opening, noting that he uses one romanization for acting and the other for music. Xu Greg-han should get a mention as another romanization that's been used officially for him as well.
Which should be the primary name for the article I think depends on whether he is more often/better known as an actor or a musician. Someone who knows his career better and/or can read Chinese would be better placed than me to determine this. Tempjrds (talk) 01:31, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Tempjrds, thank you very much for your time and help. I might need more time to think about this. Please give me a few more days. Thanks again! Have a good evening! Doedoeneoneo (talk) 11:56, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your research @Tempjrds! Just a few remarks: "Hsu" not just sounds like pinyin "Xu", it is the correct Wade–Giles romanisation for the same syllable. It is most likely that his passport actually says "Hsu Kuang-han", as that is WG for Xu Guanghan. The sources we have for "Greg Han" so far are mostly primary, and your observation that one romanisation is used for acting and one for music is so far original research. Some people do change their preferred romanisation or the name they use in English (Richie Jen used to be called "Richie Ren" but changed from Hanyu pinyin to WG), but I can't tell from what we see whether the person himself prefers one over the other. Are there any reliable sources in English that refer to 許光漢 as "Greg Han"? —Kusma (talk) 12:43, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
