Non-Relationship to Harry Hammon Lyster VC

[edit]

I see that at 11:50, on 5 December 2009 user:Kernel Saunters added an info box in which he claimed that Hamilton Lyster Reed was the nephew of Harry Hammon Lyster. The information about the relationship was also added at about the same time to the Harry Hammon Lyster page.

This claim of a relationship appears in several places on the internet, but I am not aware of an authoritative reference which proves the connection. On the other hand, two books which which deal with the genealogy of Lyster families in Ireland do not show a connection. Indeed one of these books (The Lyster Pioneers of Lower Canada and the West by Eswyn Ellinor-Lyster 1984 - ISBN 0-9691833-05) specifically shows that Hamilton Lyster Reed was the child of Andrew Reed and Elizabeth Mary Lyster and is not the nephew of Harry Hammon Lyster. This Elizabeth Mary Lyster was herself the daughter of Hamilton Lyster of Millpark Tipperary (one of the Queen's County Lysters) and Harriet Guest.

On pages 118 &120) she says,

It will be strange if there is a connection between the Rocscommon Lyster's and the Queen's county Lyster's by some 19th or 20th century marriage!......
......Another statement needs an explanation. This appears in the book The Register of the Victoria cross, This England Books, 1981, where it is said that Harry Hammon Lyster , VC is the uncle of Hamilton Lyster Reed VC, the son of Sir Andrew and Lady Reed of Dublin. When I queried This England Books they could not give me the authority they used for making the statement.

The Roscommon Lyster's are also detailed in another book "Memorials of an Ancient House" by Rev H. Lyster Denny, Edinburgh 1913. This shows Harry Hammon Lyster being unconnected to the Queens County Lysters.

I propose to delete the relationship unless someone can produce some evidence which should take piority, or at least throws doubts on these two worthy genealogical studies. Op. Deo (talk) 13:07, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
