Name change

[edit]

This article relates to an infamous 1980s new york incident that received intense press coverage at the time. It should be changed to reflect more than just the name of the victim. I'll try to think of something, but it should have "Howard Beach" in the title. Coretheapple (talk) 20:06, 25 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Since nobody objects, I'm going to rename it. Coretheapple (talk) 20:21, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Erroneous and Libelous Title

[edit]

On January 11, 2019, the title of this page was change from the "Howard Beach Racial Incident" to "Killing of Michael Griffith". On February 19, 2019, the title was changed again to "The Murder of Michael Griffith". This title is not only factually wrong, but is contradicted by the text of the article. For example:

"While trying to evade his attackers, Griffith ran in front of a moving car driven by the son of a police officer, and was killed. His body was found on the Belt Parkway at 1:03 a.m."

The title is also potentially libelous in using the term 'murder' because that implies that the death of Michael Griffith was intentional on the part of Dominick Blum. Mr. Blum was not a part of the original altercation and was a bystander that happened to be driving on the Belt Parkway when Michael Griffith tried to run across the highway. There is no evidence that Michael Griffith's death was anything but accidental. No charges were brought against Mr. Blum as stated in the article:

"The driver of the car that struck Griffith, 24-year-old Dominick Blum, was not charged with any crime; a May 1987 grand jury did not return criminal charges against him."

It is requested that the title of the article be reverted back to "Howard Beach Racial Incident" or changed to "The Howard Beach Incident" as it is known locally by those of us who remember it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.105.18.45 (talk) 02:41, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that since no one was convicted of murder, that word should not be in the title of the article. But I think the title should revert to Killing of Michael Griffith. I tried to undo the edit that moved it to Murder... but I was barred from doing so because I'm an IP editor. —99.203.54.139 (talk) 12:29, 14 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Howard Beach incidentHoward Beach racial incident – This has been moved around a few times without discussion, but "Howard Beach racial incident" was the stable title for a number of years, so I'm recommending moving it back to that. The current "Howard Beach incident" is too vague. 162 etc. (talk) 21:36, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
