Hu Zhe An or Hu Zhean
[edit]@User:Mx. Granger As far as i know, although there are many articles that spell it as Hu Zhe An, we still cannot ignore the romanization rules of Chinese names.
- Proper use of Pinyin means treating the surname and given name as precisely two separate words with no spaces between the letters of multiple Chinese characters. For example, "王秀英" is properly rendered either with its tone marks as "Wáng Xiùyīng" or without as "Wang Xiuying", but should not be written as "Wang Xiu Ying", "Wang XiuYing", "Wangxiuying", and so on. See: Chinese name and Chinese given name
- Another example here --> China at the 2024 Summer Olympics. There are 388 names, and they don't add spaces between the syllables in the given name.

- Hi Stvbastian, I'm happy to use the standard pinyin transliteration – that would be "Hu Zhe'an", not "Hu Zhean". (Because the syllable "an" begins with a vowel letter, standard hanyu pinyin rules require the apostrophe.) I'm also happy to use the spelling that's most common in English-language reliable sources, which seems to be "Hu Zhe An". The spelling "Hu Zhean" is neither correct pinyin nor used in any reliable sources that I've seen, so I don't see a justification for using it. —Mx. - Hi Mx. Granger.. Im not a native Chinese and know nothing about Chinese. Thats why im not trying to edit the article until i find the solution. So, can i replace Hu Zhe An to Hu Zhe'an in that article? Because, i think it would be nice if Wikipedia gave an example about romanization of Chinese name.. Thanks Stvbastian (talk) 15:33, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, changing it to Hu Zhe'an is fine with me. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 15:57, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- It's really confusing which spelling should be used. Another badminton player, the late Sun Zhian, technically also should have his name written as Sun Zhi'an according to pinyin, but the WikiProject kept it as Sun Zhian for (I guess) convenience and standardization. With all that said, I agree to write Hu's name either as Zhe'an or Zhean :)

- In that article, at least there's one source cited that uses the spelling "Sun Zhian", so that's a bit more justification for using it than we have for "Hu Zhean". Still, I think the article should probably be moved to Sun Zhi'an. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 13:26, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
