John Tipton's middle name

[edit]

Looking for evidence that John Tipton's middle name was Shields. His mother's maiden name was Shields, but is there any evidence that his middle name was Shields? Jerry Stockton (talk) 03:03, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

General John Tipton was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. His grave marker shows "GEN'L JOHN TIPTON" died April 5 1839 aged 53 years. No middle name and no middle initial. The book "The John Tipton Papers" with an introduction by Paul Wallace Gates, 1942, does not show John Tipton with a middle name or middle initial. It does include several letters that are all signed "John Tipton" no middle name and no middle initial. https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/001655448 Jerry Stockton (talk) 17:57, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
History of Cass County, Indiana, by Thomas B. Helm, 1878, lots of mentions of John Tipton, no mention of a John Shields Tipton. https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/011823257 Jerry Stockton (talk) 19:00, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
