Earlier origins of phrase

[edit]

"The slogan was coined in 1988 at an advertising agency meeting." Not to take anything away from Mr. Wieden, but...

The phrase was in common use very much earlier, perhaps most famously in nearby San Francisco. Eminent Zen instructor Sunryu Suzuki used the phrase as an injunction to follow the pracices, trusting tradition and teaching with devotion even absent understanding. Example:

"Just do it. That is our way, you know. —January 12, 1968" http://www.cuke.com/Cucumber%20Project/lectures/quotes-redican-collection.html

Rollins Band cover if “Do It” released one year prior.

[edit]

Rollins Band released their cover of the Pink Fairies song “Do It” with Henry Rollins screaming the lyric “…just do it! Do it” which some may argue was the inspiration for the advertising campaign launched by Nike months later. 107.126.28.52 (talk) 20:43, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
