Wiki Education Foundation-supported course assignment

[edit]

This article is or was the subject of a Wiki Education Foundation-supported course assignment. Further details are available on the course page. Student editor(s): Ayaan Asad Siddiqui.

Above undated message substituted from Template:Dashboard.wikiedu.org assignment by PrimeBOT (talk) 19:54, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Started in 2004, deepin has been developed by Wuhan Deepin Technology Co., Ltd, a Chinese company.

What's their revenue model? --orschiro (talk) 13:43, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This video goes over it. TL;DR: they get contracts with the Chinese government. --Voidvector (talk) 07:27, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New contributions to this page

[edit]

I have chosen this Wikipedia page for an assignment, and will be making contributions to the page. The page will see a lot of changes, as I will be replacing or modifying existing text on this page. I plan on adding a lot more information on the History section of the page, and possibly other sections if need be. In addition to that, I also plan on making at least two of the following sections: Controversies, Features, and Criticism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ayaan Asad Siddiqui (talkcontribs) 14:30, 17 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Deepin Spyware?

[edit]

That section may need to be completely reworked. It doesn't make sense. Also the link to Quora does not back up the claim that "This caused many of the users, and the Linux community to suspect that Deepin was providing backdoors for the Chinese government."

On the performance issue, the default repository, I would assume is in China. Other linux distributions recommend that you choose a repository that is nearer to where you live.--Terry Patterson (talk) 12:04, 29 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed that whole section needs to be removed since it doesn't make any sense. CNZZ is just a Chinese website statistic counter tool (CNZZ literally means Chinese Webmaster Tools). When I go to the Ubuntu site, it sends requests to the Google Analytics site www.google-analytics.com, the same logic of this section here means there should be a Ubuntu Spyware section added to the Ubuntu wiki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ufopedia (talkcontribs) 12:08, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Deepin acknowledged the backlash, and in response, removed it. I would say that it is notable on that grounds. The problem is it wasn't covered by any reliable sources besides Deepin themselves because it's a non-mainstream Linux distribution. Also, there is a ton of controversy surrounding Ubuntu and their privacy practices that has led to even Richard Stallman criticizing them.ShimonChai (talk) 12:22, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm replacing the Quora "ref" by cn (appropriate for PRChina ;)), since one anonymous question on a blog is not a reliable source. The link is https://www.quora.com/Is-Deepin-OS-a-spyware in case someone feels that s/he can use it within the WP:RS guidelines. I did a few other fixes too to make this a bit more encyclopedic.
Adding Google Analytics controversies (community complaints about spyware) on the Wikipedia entries of the zillion or so Wikipedia-notable websites that use Google Analytics and other trackers would be, in principle, a Good Thing. Unfortunately (or fortunately in terms of the Wikipedia editing load), there probably aren't enough reliable sources who bother to complain about the ubiquitous Google Analytics spyware on those other zillion sites. A Wikipedian interested in doing a bot for this might be inspired, though I'm not convinced that it would be worth the effort... Boud (talk) 21:49, 1 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Screenshot of operating system

[edit]

On the Ubuntu article they have a screenshot of the said system in the infobox. Could someone if possible add one for this main article on Deepin's infobox so that people can see what it looks like and if possible show the efficient mode and the beautiful mode together in the screenshot so that they know? ImpWarfare (talk) 09:39, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've gone ahead and added a screenshot of the operating system as displayed on my computer. Hope it's alright. ImpWarfare (talk) 09:55, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Licencing

[edit]

I note that the info-box says Open Source, and GPL licenses. This is inaccurate.

  • The base system is not all GPL, it is all Free Software licences. But also Debian (the base system), has a non-free repository for free-ish licences software.
  • The main article states that Deepin also includes propitiatory software.

Therefore the info-box needs correcting. I will leave this for someone that knows more about this distro.

FYI. Deepin desktop is all open-source. However, some deepin system apps are proprietary. Such as mail app or browser - https://community-packages.deepin.com/deepin/beige/pool/commercial/d/ 109.243.64.71 (talk) 22:21, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
