Alphabetisation[edit]

it will be nice, if the names are arranged in alphabetical order in each category.. (Nubin_wiki 09:17, 23 January 2007 (UTC))[reply]

I agree. Done. -- TinaSparkle (talk) 16:45, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Academics[edit]

Ramachandra Guha and a couple of others seem to be the only academics on this list. No other contributions to History, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, ... ? Mahoka 10:42, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

And what about attributions to for instance, 1. who coined the term "Stephenians" and 2. which critics have spoken of "A Stephen's School of Literature"? 58.68.48.82 (talk) 08:18, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Almost total lack of citations - removal of uncited names from the list[edit]

The lack of citations renders this article totally unreliable. Additionally, since many of the people in the list are still living, it must adhere to the need for citations under the WP:BLP criteria Fiddle Faddle (talk) 11:04, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I intend to start to remove all uncited entries on this list shortly. There is a banner at the head of the article calling for citations, and this message has been here on the talk page since 7 May 2012. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 06:22, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sufficient time has elapsed since my last message on removal of alumni for me to take the step of removing all uncited people from the list. Any and all of these people and more may be re-added provided citations in reliable sources are in place that both verify their notability and show that they are alumni of this establishment. People re-added without citations will be removed from the list. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 10:16, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Notice[edit]

In order to seek to prevent chaos descending upon this list again I have requested the following edit notice be created and applied. It is uncontroversial in that it upholds Wikipedias need for citations:

The reason for the edit notice is that the article has been edited historically section by section. As the list of notable alumni regerows the edit notice will be easily available wherever the list is edited.

The eventual wording of the notice may vary. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 11:20, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done and applied to the page. Now every alumnus will be a cited alumnus and the article will be the better for it. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 14:14, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The commented out list of potential alumni[edit]

Even commented out so they are not displayed, those listed here as Alumni must be cited as such. There are no exceptions to WP:BLP. It is a major policy. Lack of adherence may expose WIkipedia to challenges by individual affected by what they perceive as, and what may be, incorrect information about them. Our duty as individual editors is to guard against that.

I have thus deleted what might be termed the ghost list from the article. Fiddle Faddle 13:16, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure about this. PBASH607 is still working on citing all of the alumni on the list, and as such, I do believe it is being actively worked on still. To help further my understanding Timtrent, could you link me to the section of WP:BLP that says that commented out sections of text that are being worked on to meet standards required for citation are not allowed? I know for certain that copyrighted images are allowed outside of article space as long as they are not "displayed" and I would think that copyright laws and rules would be much more strict here. Thanks you. Also, as a tangential side note, would you consider replacing the deprecated <font>...</font> tags from your signature. [[User:Timtrent|<span style="color:#800">Fiddle</span>]] [[User talk:Timtrent|<span style="color:#070">Faddle</span>]] should produce the exact same output and not use "bad" tags. Thanks! Technical 13 (talk) 14:52, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Technical 13 I am on the job as of now, sorry for the delay, I have looked up reliable sources and found some. Sorry I had to finish an adoption course :P Prabash.Akmeemana 14:56, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is not a matter of chapter and verse, and the matter is not the same as the laws of copyright. BLP policies have been created to seek to minimise the uttering of libels and defamatory statements. So, listing a set of names in a public web page, even if only available in the source, has de facto BLP issues. Fiddle Faddle 16:46, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Timtrent, while I cannot argue against the removals of the lists of alumni, I believe atleast they should have been added to the talk page with a note to source them all. I'll work with PBASH607 here to source all the names on this old version. All of the names I was trying to locate turned out to be from St Stephens. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 16:21, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • They exist in the article history. Nothing is ever lost here. There is no point in moving them to the talk page, the more so since BLP issues exist in all segments of Wikipedia, talk pages included. One must be remarkably careful with that which one asserts about a person when that perosn is alive. While there is no legal issue to do so common courtesy means we extend the same thought process to those who are dead.
That someone may or may not be working on sourcing something is, regrettably, not material. One researches, and edits each person into a list individually. There is no need for placeholders.
When an entry to the list is correctly cited you will never find an argument form me against inclusion if they are inherently notable. If they are not then no citation will save them. I am an alumnus of a school and of a university. You can find me in the press, but I am not notable. Fiddle Faddle 16:32, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Some good faith will be good. Thank you. My stating of currently working on the article was only to inform the other editors, and not as an argument for adding the unsourced list. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 16:43, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I never assumed a thing other than that you are acting in good faith. This article has been troublesome with its lack of citations and the drive by edits adding favourite uncles (I exaggerate for effect) to it for a considerable time. I am heartened that people are now, at last, taking it under their wings and seeking to make it a sound and cited article. I am concerned only with the quality of the article. no more and no less. PLease read nothing personal into my remarks, there is no intent to offend. I apologise that I have offended you inadvertently. Fiddle Faddle 16:50, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Currently removed material - Considering adding them later[edit]

I've removed the following statement and will consider adding them again once the initial list is done. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 16:43, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"The preponderance of Stephanians in Indo-Anglian writing was so great for some time that some critics began to speak of the "Stephanian School of Literature". This issue has been heavily debated in the book The Fiction of St. Stephen's, by various writers and scholars, including Amitav Ghosh, Shashi Tharoor, Upamanyu Chatterjee, Mukul Kesavan and Khushwant Singh. The book is edited by Aditya Bhattacharjea and Lola Chatterjee."
  • I've been ambivalent about that statement for some time. I've left it alone out of inertia, but feel that it adds little to the alumni article. Its place, surely, is in the college's article. if anywhere? Good removal. Fiddle Faddle 17:02, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Having a Wikipedia article is currently the only check I'm performing for the notability of any person. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 18:09, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More removal. Will require a more thorough checking for sources -

This is greatly improved[edit]

I like very much the additions with their attendant citations. A plea, though. Please make sure the sections are in alphabetical order of family name? It's far easier to do this now than to wait for the future. Fiddle Faddle 13:00, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • There are actually a lot of names to be added from the old list, and I'm trudging along with them. So I just keep adding several names at a time. But I'll try and make sure the names are in alphabetical order. If I am not wrong, they are in alphabetic order of their first names, right? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 13:22, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • They are meant to be in order of family name, sub sorted by order of forename(s) within family name. From experience it is so much easier to do these as you go than to re-order them later. Fiddle Faddle 13:58, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have now both ordered the entries by family name and reinstated a comment in each section regarding alphabetical order. Please let us adhere to this. Fiddle Faddle 13:36, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I take no credit for the work of others. I simply insisted that any alumnus must be cited as such. My own work here has been small. Fiddle Faddle 14:58, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
