Question

[edit]

I thought Crosby was from Humboldt County, CA, not from Texas.

Good job with the edits Ryan, I like how the page looks.

Just added some more current info and fixed up the discography to only include the tangible, or more significant releases (i.e. omitted the initial download versions of Turquoise & Crimson). I also changed it from a table view to a gallery. Please feel free to add pages for A Complete Demonstration, etc, if you find the time. If not, I'm sure I'll add them sooner or later.

Update: Just created all the missing pages, and tidied a few things up. - Ryan

The Name of the Band

[edit]

The band is called Vast and it does not stand for Visual Audio Sensory Theater as far as I understand it, that is just the title of their first album. Someone ought to correct that. As I have seen it, in writing (in the booklet for the Turquoise/Crimson double EP) Crosby spells it Vast. --chewbacca1010

I'd have to disagree; if you visit the official website, and enter the site (the flash-driven section, which includes all the content) the page source (and hence the browser's title bar) includes the "VAST - Visual Audio Sensory Theater" phrase within title brackets. VAST is the short form, but it is definitely an acronym for the full name of the band. - Lakmiseiru 07:33, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Further commentary - the site has changed quite a lot, and now only references VAST. However, their linked Facebook page (such a trustworthy source, I know) mentions "Visual Audio Sensory Theater", so maybe the acronym expansion isn't totally dead? Hard to tell at this point, but I'm leaving it in. - Lakmiseiru (talk) 00:41, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Status of Members

[edit]

I think the drummer, Dustin Williams left VAST. This is based on info that I obtained from Myspace and Jon Crosby said that the drummer departed. So, it seems the band is in the search for a new drummer right now. - The Collector

Details

[edit]

As informative as this page is on the subject of history, it contains nothing of VAST's musical style, public reception, sales, etc. Is there anyone out there that might undertake the addition of this information? - Dikastis 21:59, 10 April 2007 (UTC)Dikastis[reply]

I'd love to help - but i'm afraid I'm a bit new to them... How about I detail a few ideas that I feel like fit then other people can make a few comments?...
Well I think it's important to note that they've got a sound that is a relatively fluid mix of electronic and industrial elements meshed together with others that are more common to a hard rock or metal kind of sound.
To me it feels like the electronic components come predominantly from the style of drumming utilised and from samples. The main vocals as well as guitars/bass offer a more steady rock feel. The guitars and vocals aren't used in a manner that is particularly deviant from a sound expected from a more conventionally rock styled band.
The combination of these different elements and influences means that Vast produces music which is less reliant on one style in order to build its sound. This gives Vast a progressive sort of feel and a large scope of sound, with tracks utilising minimalistic electronic samples or acoustic guitars, right through to texturally rich tracks employing many different instruments and samples.

Maybe also talk about what sort of ideas they pull from different things? Like that their progressive influences don't give them grand and epic concept albums in the same sort of sense you might expect from other bands... I don't know really. Any input appreciated. Confusing info in this review ...

[edit]

http://www.halo-17.net/reviews/index/VAST/Nude/6135 How am I to understand that? Jon Crosby, the sole member of Vast, has just completed this process, and "Nude" is the end result of his four years in the musical wilderness. The SOLE member? So this is actually a one-man band, according to the review? Or what is it that didn't I get here? -andy 92.229.137.44 (talk) 11:17, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
