naming

[edit]

Netherlands New Guinea was always treated as a separate colony to the Netherlands East Indies

What is the source for the claim that the Dutch sanctioned the name West Papua? Here is the text of the ordinances of 1961 dealing with the new flag and anthem, but clearly not with the name; they explicitly speak of the "flag of Netherlands New Guinea", not of "West Papua". --Wik 22:07, May 4, 2004 (UTC)

Yes, you seem to be correct. I think we should remove mention of the name West Papua at all until we can figure out exactly what was going on. john 22:09, 4 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Also, do you think the page should be moved to Netherlands New Guinea? john 22:10, 4 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that would seem to be more correct. Also, I don't think the discussion about what happened after Dutch rule belongs in this article at all. --Wik 22:14, May 4, 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I concur. I took out much of it already. I shall move the page. john 22:23, 4 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

The renaming of everything to "New Guinea" in the article has gone too far.

Now I cannot understand if "New Guinea" refers to the entire island, to British New Guinea, to Papua New Guinea (British New Guinea + German New Guinea ) or to the land that Netherlands actually controlled, or to the territory/country Netherlands intended to form. I believe they intended to claim the entire island, but declared the border when Britain (Queensland representing Britain) and Germany colonised.

Let's not forget that German New Guinea was renamed to Papua , and the entire island was and perhaps is still called Papua, as well as New Guinea.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is now dividing Dutch New Guinea, the west part "West Papua", and the eastern part just "Papua", despite the name clash both have with the independent country next door, the name of the racial group, and a name used to name the island of New Guinea.

So it's not wise to just shorten the name when Netherlands New Guinea was just a part, and their idea of controlling the whole never even happened.

Use the longer term, Netherlands New Guinea, and similarly use a longer term where referring to the island as a whole ("The island of New Guinea" ) and to the other parts that the Netherlands never controlled (British New Guinea, German New Guinea, Papua New Guinea ... ) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.92.33.42 (talk) 03:49, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Flag and Coat of Arms

[edit]

The flag and coat of arms were introduced in the New Guinea Raad on December 1 1961. They were then used alongside the Dutch flag in Hollandia (Jayapura), and in some towns during early 1962 before the short UNTEA period. I have no problem with the Bintang Kejora flag being used, because it covers some of the period, but the Flag of the Netherlands should also be there, as this was the flag under which West New Guinea flew under for most of this period (including in many places between Dec 1961 and October 1962). The current arrangements on the page are misleading. Mostlyharmless (talk) 09:30, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was considered to be the last flag addopted by the NNG, and per wiki policy to always display the last flag used by a territory the flag sould stay up. But you could make a new section about this on: Flag of West Papua.--SelfQ (talk) 10:31, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have added dates to the flag and coat of arms to show they were only used for a brief period of time. – Editør (talk) 09:44, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality dispute

[edit]

So, where is the discussion about this dispute? If it isn't here then what is the tag doing in the article? --DeVerm (talk) 04:05, 2 February 2011 (UTC).[reply]

I see the tag was added in 2010 while there was absolutely zero discussion that year. I'll remove it until the discussion starts --DeVerm (talk) 04:07, 2 February 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Netherlands New GuineaDutch New Guinea – For consistency across Wikipedia (per WP:CONSISTENT), "Dutch" is the denonym for all of the colonies of Dutch Empire such as Dutch Formosa, Dutch India, Dutch Brazil, Dutch Mauritius, and others. This is Google Books showing the common use of the name, as well. Bluesatellite (talk) 05:09, 29 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
