The result of the proposal was move from Ōgon Batto to Ōgon Bat, per WP:MOS-JP and the discussion below. Redirects will be created from all variant transliterations to ensure ease of navigation. Dekimasuよ! 01:18, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am tempted to move this to Ōgon Batto, as that would be the most directly accurate name. But as it has so recently been moved to and from a variety of versions, I'm guessing there's some controversy involved. What's the story? Thanks. LordAmeth 16:43, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there was this old discussion; to solve that I changed the name to Ōgon Batto per WP:MOS-JA, but DC&Marvel maniac cut and pasted the whole article to Ogon Batto writing that "Such a letter is très bizarre" [1], then when it was reverted he moved it to Ogon Batto (Gold Bat) writing that "A simple google search indicates the name with "Gold Bat" or "The Golden Bat" as it 'tis" [2]. I support the Hepburn transliterated name, of course, but let's await comments from Drvanthorp, Endroit and DC&Marvel maniac. --Εξαίρετος (msg) 17:01, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Let me explain what happened. There were originally TWO articles Ôgon Batto and Phantoma, until I merged them into Phantoma (without discussion) on April 26. I believed Phantoma was the appropriate English name at that time.
However the creator of Ôgon Batto, Drvanthorp complained at WT:ANIME and a histmerge was initiated on his behalf, and then later abandonned. On May 4, Exairetos moved the article to Ōgon Batto (without discussion), which I agree is the correct name per WP:MOS-JA. Obviously, Drvanthorp & I never objected. And so I believe the status quo was now Ōgon Batto.
Then on May 31, DC&Marvel maniac did a cut&paste move to Ogon Batto, which I reverted. On June 5, DC&Marvel maniac moved the article to Ogon Batto (Gold Bat) (without discussion), which I object to.
I believe that this article is most appropriately named Ōgon Batto, and should be moved back there.--Endroit 17:10, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.: Ōgon Batto is the uniquely identifying name, and is the most appropriate, although I would consider Ōgon Bat as an alternative. Gold Bat usually refers to The Gold Bat by P. G. Wodehouse, NOT Ōgon Batto, and so may not be used. Golden Bat may refer to many different things (and is already used), and so is an ambiguous name.--Endroit 12:03, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:MOS-JA, for transliterations from katakana, use the English spelling if available, Ōgon Bat is more appropriate than Ōgon Batto. --Kusunose 12:39, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
True; I didn't think about that. I'd go with Ōgon Bat, then. --Εξαίρετος (msg) 15:53, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This should not be, why use a bizarre "Ō" when it amply can be moved to Ogon Bat? The English and U.S. keyboards do not have that strange letter. You say to follow a sort of Japanese guideline I say ignore it by policy. DC&Marvel maniac 01:10, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I believe what DC&Marvel maniac is trying to say here is that the Ō should be a standard O. Also, what google search indicates the name widely being "Ogon Batto (Gold Bat)"? I couldn't find anything of that common title. Phantoma is a more acclaimed name anyways, this is the English Wikipedia. Lord Sesshomaru
For the record, and so I don't have to stop by this page again, everyone should know that WP:IAR is not applicable in this situation. DC&Marvelmaniac, do not use it again. Rockstar (T/C) 16:30, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing is incorrect by going in deep with a strong policy. Thought I'd drop in my two cents: If the rules prevent you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia, ignore them. It tis for the best anyways. DC&Marvel maniac 05:01, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A redirect can be created from the title without the macron, and the article can go at the title with the macron, so the macron is not a problem for purposes of navigation. Kusunose is correct that the title which most closely reflects WP:MOS-JP is Ōgon Bat. Unless anyone would like to present evidence that Phantoma is a more prevalent name in English, I will likely move the page to that title. Dekimasuよ! 01:14, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since I see from the recent WP:RM request that Sesshomaru is no longer asking for a move to Phantoma, I will close the discussion now. Dekimasuよ! 01:18, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Origin

[edit]

Golden Bat (ゴールデンバット) cigarettes (a Japanese brand) may predate the Golden Bat superhero. There is a foolish notion that Golden Bat cigarettes were spiked with opium and distributed to Chinese in occupied Manchuria to "control" them. Not only would this not produce any sort of "control" effect (god knows what the perpetuators of this myth think smoking opium does to you), it would also create a tremendous demand for them among the occupying troops. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.215.115.31 (talk) 18:53, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the following links for concerns with WP:ELNO:

Some of these should be referenced. I didn't want to remove them outright, so I am placing them here for review. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 23:27, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ogon Bat to Golden Bat?

[edit]

I read in a different talk session that unless there's an official English title translation, the name of the Japanese show, movie, etc. should be left in Japanese. But I found a few Japanese promotion material that uses the English Golden Bat title. We should move this article to accommodate this unless anyone objects. http://www.kinenote.com/main/public/cinema/detail.aspx?cinema_id=22086

Author?

[edit]

This page currently claims the character was created by a writer named Ichiro Suzuki and then links to the page about the baseball player with the same name. Was there a writer who had the same name, or is this a case of nonsensical vandalism? I could not find any citations about the name of the character's author. 67.80.162.36 (talk) 08:11, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch (pun intended). I changed it per one of the references.--Nowa (talk) 10:11, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Youtube video on character.

[edit]

Did Everything Copy This? goes over the history of Golden Bat including a now lost 1950 movie, a lost 1970s film, and a lot of information not in the wiki.--174.99.238.22 (talk) 04:45, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Post WW2 backstory

[edit]

As far as we know all info about his bacstory to his design seems to be a product of a post-ww2 development. The Japanese wikipedia mentions that all drawings pre world war were burned. It's interesting to note that the stamps claimed to be from the 30s seem to have been drawings from the author of the manga post-WW2. Mirad1000 (talk) 11:33, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Year of creation?

[edit]

The article provides two different years for the first creation of the character. The intro states he was created "in autumn of 1930" (this is poor English, by the way). The History section gives "1931" instead. Which is the correct one? Kumagoro-42 (talk) 02:15, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
