Move?[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

No consensus to move. Feel free to continue a discussion and see if some consensus can develop on one of the options mentioned. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:21, 5 February 2012 (UTC) Paul Quinn (rugby union)Paul Quinn (New Zealand politician)[reply]

  • Quinn is notable for being an MP in NZ, not for his rugby career. Mattlore (talk) 22:06, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Notable in New Zealand. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 05:06, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I admit some lazyness on this. I did not know which one he was more notable for and chose (rugby union) because I was unable to move it to (New Zealand politician). Before this it was simply (New Zealand) which was not a very good DAB. Moving to New Zealand politician is fine by me. AIRcorn (talk) 05:22, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. Can one person be a "union"? Isn't he a "rugby player"? Kauffner (talk) 14:33, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Kauffner, see here for that discussion on the RU project page. Mattlore (talk) 19:58, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rugby union is the correct name for the sport and differentiates it from the similar, but separate, code of rugby league. The discussion linked to by Matt is about whether to use "rugby union" or "rugby union player" in DABs. AIRcorn (talk) 23:46, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sounds like a good reason to get rid of "union". Most readers searching for Paul Quinn are looking for the college, the guitarist, or the singer. We can't assume they know about different types of rugby. Kauffner (talk) 04:29, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't follow, what is the good reason for removing "union"? The sports name is rugby union, a different sports name is rugby league (think field hockey and ice hockey). Also there is a Paul Quinn (rugby league) to take into account. Anyway if he is more notable for being a politician this is moot. AIRcorn (talk) 04:51, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. It would appear from the article that he is at least as notable for being a rugby union player as for being a politician, and that also makes for a less verbose dab. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:36, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. Under the rugby union notability guidelines Quinn would fail as he hasn't represented a international side or professional team (WP:NRU). Under the politician guidelines (WP:POLITICIAN) he easily passes as an elected member of a national parliament. Mattlore (talk) 22:57, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • He would easily pass WP:GNG though. Playing and captaining Wellington and the Maoris, director of Rugby New Zealand and chairman of the New Zealand Maori Rugby Board are going to get him some mentions in newspapers. AIRcorn (talk) 23:15, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment If it makes a difference it was originally disambiguated as (politician) then changed to (New Zealand politician) and then (New Zealand) before I changed it to (rugby union). AIRcorn (talk) 02:36, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No consensus?[edit]

Is there really no consensus. Only one person objected to the move...Mattlore (talk) 04:15, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Seems silly, doesn't it? The disambiguator should not be any more precise than necessary. How about Paul Quinn (politician)? Kauffner (talk) 14:23, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There already is a politician named Paul Quinn. AIRcorn (talk) 21:42, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: moved to Paul Quinn (New Zealand politician). Favonian (talk) 00:00, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Quinn (rugby union)Paul Quinn (New Zealand politician) — I thought I would reopen the discussion on this. Quinn is notable as a politician by the fact that he was an MP. As Mattlore explained above, he was not notable as a rugby union player. As AIRcorn pointed out, he may well have achieved notability as an administrator for rugby union. I would argue that he is much more notable as a politician than his rugby union involvement. As such, the disambiguator should reflect that. As there is a Missouri politician already, the country disambiguator will have to be included. I will notify all those contributors who commented on the previous move request. Survey[edit]

  • Support. Recent news accounts identify him politically. He is "National MP Paul Quinn"[1] or "National's Paul Quinn"[2]. There are one or two places where he is mentioned as a board member for the rugby league, but there's nothing in the news archive about his career as a player. Kauffner (talk) 04:04, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. As being an MP is his most notable achievement. Mattlore (talk) 04:28, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral. In the last discussion, I opposed the renaming, but there seems to be more evidence now of him being notable as an MP. Not enough to make it a clear choice for me, but enough for either option to be OK. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:39, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

It would be nice to have some more information about him being a MP in the article. AIRcorn (talk) 22:08, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agree completely that this section needs to be expanded. Mattlore (talk) 04:28, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That section has now been expanded somewhat, but this is irrelevant to the disambiguation issue. Schwede66 10:42, 21 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
