Seems a little light description of what actually happened, perhaps someone could improve it and bring more sourses.Sanitycult (talk) 20:38, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fetish

[edit]

A "fetish" has several meanings. Quickly, sexual fetishism relies on an object or nonsexual part of the body for arousal. It eventually necessary for someone with the fetish to utilise the item in their sexual acts and fantasies in order to become aroused. Killing an animal is an act and cannot be a sexual fetish. Guns could be a fetish in this sense, but that would imply using them in a sexual act (alone or otherwise). Fetishes are also totems (which I don't see being applicable in this case). Fetish is also used colloquially to mean someone who is abnormally obsessive about something. This connotation is not necessarily appropriate for an encyclopedia entry. Having a fetish for guns or killing animals isn't quite appropriate in the context. The fact that he was also obviously mentally ill also would make his behaviour less fetish-oriented and more compulsive. --Waterspyder 22:40, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

warning

[edit]

hey I thought wikipedia isn't censored, so what gives?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.187.129.4 (talk) 16:34, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't say putting a warning up is exactly censorship.--Foot Dragoon 02:59, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Is that really necessary? Other similar articles don't have such warnings, if people are reading up on murderers they should already be expecting to hear some pretty undesirable things. Xzamuel 12:36, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have to say, if you read the full description of what exactly he did on some other sites, its disturbing; I watch horror movies and read about stuff like this, and I've heard some messed up stuff but this was just disturbing on another level. The person below who mentioned that we don't need certain details is right, and if the article was written with all the details in I would honestly recommend a warning too; its far worse than anything else I've ever read on here or would have expected... Rewrite

[edit]

This article was nearly plagiarized from the Crime Library article on Richard Chase. The original author evidently followed the original CL article very closely, changing wording. It was previous overly graphic and written in a titillating manner, going into great detail about Chase's sodomization of victims, which organs he ate and how, and using language more tabloidesque than encyclopedic. The previous writing style was more "breathless dimestore crime novel" than encyclopedia entry.

I've rewritten it to remove the CL structure, make it more formal, etc. I have no special interest or knowledge of Chase, so I'm relying on the original. Someone should take another pass through it. Afabbro 20:56, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is a poorly written article but by far not the worse one will find on Wikipedia. It can still use some good editing. 75.48.4.160 (talk) 05:50, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disappointed

[edit]

This article is clearly not true. No valid references have been used, and there is no evidence to suggest that Richard Trenton Chase even existed, aside from a few websites that appear to be created by the author of this article. Until more information is provided, this article has no place on wikipedia. As someone who cares about wikipedia, I am deeply offended by these gross falsifications.

Okay, well, he did exist. Robert Ressler, formerly of the FBI, wrote a chapter on him and has met him in person. Just googling "Richard Trenton Chase" brings up rather a lot of articles, in addition to numerous images, all of which the author did not create on his or her own, right? His case has also been profiled on Discovery Channel. I do agree this article needs citations, though! It has zero as it stands now, which makes me keep wondering, as I read through it "Who says so?"71.63.119.49 01:09, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The apartment complex where he lived, on Watt Ave. in Sacramento, is still there. It is a famous case and anyone who thinks it didn't happen is blatantly foolish. It is an easy enough thing to look up. 75.48.4.160 (talk) 05:46, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This killer did exist he killed my best friends step brother David Ferreira and his aunt, her son and friend. So please review a newspaper or some other article from that time period before denying the existence of this sick puppy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.7.91.238 (talk) 20:01, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I just watched his case covered by "The New Detectives" in the episode "Mind Hunters" which also covered John Wayne Gacey 40.131.156.70 (talk) 02:10, 25 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

How/when was he apprehended by police? Narrative jumps from his final murder to his court case.

Question

[edit]

Why does no evidence suggest this individual existed? This is pathetic. I'm not sure if you're the same person as above, but yes Chase did exist, and this article seems to more or less match fmr. FBI Agent Ressler's account of him and his crimes, which also includes his being turned in by a former classmate who encountered Chase in bloody clothes. Citations are really needed to make this article acceptable, though. I'm not sure what kind of evidence he existed you need? Ressler's book is available: http://www.amazon.com/Whoever-Fights-Monsters-Tracking-Killers/dp/0312950446/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-7771131-0317436?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1187917945&sr=8-1 71.63.119.49 01:14, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Answer

[edit]

I have to chime in. He was a classmate of my father's. I have seen him in home videos of ours from my father's childhood. He targeted specific family members of mine on his list of intended victims, but thankfully none of them were murdered. Richard Chase existed. Jaime 20:44, 1 August 2010 (UTC)your family knew Richard chase? did he display any behavior like it says in here? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Study serial killers (talkcontribs)

I went to high school with some cousin of his (in North Highlands, just north of Sacramento) and once actually got a ride with him and his cousin. 75.48.4.160 (talk) 05:49, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Citation Warning? Wrong!

[edit]

"This article does not cite any references or sources. (April 2008)"? Really? Then what are those Notes, Citations and References?

Copy edit

[edit]

I copy edited the article, cleaning up style, punctuation, grammar. In addition, I replaced the unreferenced tag with refimprove and added the weasel tag to address the following:

  • "allegations which were later called into question"
  • "There were arguments as to whether Chase was schizophrenic or suffering from a drug-induced psychosis".
  • "Critics contend that..."

Original Research?

[edit]

I have noticed that the tone of this article (and the scarce references) seems to reek of "original research". At the very least: This stuff needs to be sourced. bwmcmaste (talk) 03:29, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I second this point, this article seems below average for a wikipedia article --Hiveir (talk) 18:44, 20 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Institutionalization

[edit]

The second paragraph under this heading makes no sense, particularly these two sentences:

He claimed he obtained the syringes from cracking open the disposable boxes left in the doctor's offices. It took them weeks before they figured it out, and now they have no longer brought any therapeutic animals in.

What syringes? Figured what out, and who? I'm hesitant to edit this until I know exactly what's trying to be said. Deadnettle (talk) 06:34, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If I'm reading it right, it is saying that the psychiatric hospital he was in had a therapy dog, and the charming Mr. Chase managed to steal some syringes from the sharps waste boxes in the hospital and take blood from the dog to inject into himself. A New Book About Richard Chase

[edit]

My name is Kevin M. Sullivan and I'm a writer of true crime and history. My book, Vampire: The Richard Chase Murders, is being released in July 2012 as an eBook, with a trade paper version soon to follow. Everything contained in the book is taken directly from the case files, and from the investigators responsible for finding the killer, and ultimately, apprehending Richard Trenton Chase.Kmsullivan12 (talk) 18:33, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

One to ponder?

[edit]

From reading the signs and symptoms of Chase's mental condition (through to his crimes and subsequent treatment) I invite you to read this wiki page on the mental disorder Cotard Delusion

...then compare and contrast.

Chase was sentenced to death after the court 'rejected the argument that he was not guilty by reason of insanity'. One has to wonder what may (not) had transpired, had Chase been diagnosed and treated appropriately in adolescence. --95.151.134.99 (talk) 10:10, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Serial Killer or Spree Killer?

[edit]

Would he be a spree killer rather than a serial killer as he killed in less than a months span and serial killers have to have at least two of their murders taking place over more than a month and including a significant period of time between them?--Shktriib1 (talk) 00:12, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Page numbers instead of Entire book cite

[edit]

Looking over this article, I have noticed a lot of the citations point to the entire book Vampire: The Richard Chase Murders. Unfortionately, this sort of citation stye is inadequate as it covers such a broad scope of a 144 page book. I highly recommend that this be changed into an sfn format where each piece of information you are giving is cited using the page the info is located on.
