Buried in a piano case? yasssss

[edit]

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Robert Earl Hughes was buried in a coffin the size of a piano case, not in an actual piano case.97.73.64.150 (talk) 01:17, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to this source, that story is apocryphal.

As I read it, that group says the same as the article... that he was not buried in a piano case.Shajure (talk) 19:06, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Death

[edit]

Article here: " On July 10, 1958, Hughes contracted a case of measles,[2] which soon developed into uremia,[2] resulting in his death in Bremen, Indiana". The article gives his death on the very same day. Was it really so - he died of complications of measles on the very day of the infection?!--Alexmagnus (talk) 12:56, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reworked the death section... I don't see a date for 1st symptoms.Shajure (talk) 21:18, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rampant Vandalism

[edit]

It seems like this page has been a target of various vandals. Please on the lookout for them. BlacknoseDace (talk) 13:24, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There are admins which are abusing their power

[edit]

The final weight of Robert Earl Hughes was between 472kg (1041lbs) and 485kg (1069lbs and an admin with the username of BlacknoseDace Keeps on reverting this back to the incorrect weight of Hughes. I will be reporting this if it happens again.

I am not an admin. I am an autoconfirmed editor. This page is a frequent target of vandalism by IP editors, who usually mess with weights. The two weights show different sources, and the 485kg weight falls between the two. If you would like to, you may add a specification about the 485kg weight with a citation, but do not remove the 1071 pound estimate while there is a source attached. In addition to this, this is an article about an american person, and should have weights in pounds first, then kilograms. Regards, BlacknoseDace (talk) 18:26, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have studied the subject: Robert Earl Hughes for 2 years and I can confirm that 951lbs was one of the weigh ins however was definitely not his highest weight. You could put his weight as 200lbs and it will be true Because he surpassed that weight. however the specific reason his page was created because the public is interested in his peak weight of 1041lbs to 1069lbs mostly for the reason he had the ability to carry this weight. I will take his weight out of his introduction and find a way to add his weight back onto the quick facts.

The 1071lb claim was a result when a IP address vandal raised the weight to 8471lbs but was changed back by unsure people. I have not yet seen any 1071lb confirmation — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.38.119.16 (talk) 14:05, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I guess the weight should be reported in the units used by the reliable source and converted using the "Convert" template. Otherwise other editors cannot confirm that the source and the text match. Regards  Velella  Velella Talk

please change edited photo

[edit]

Yes he was extreme large, however the photo currently being used is edited to make him look even more comically obese. Could someone please change it to a different photo, or the original unedited version of that photo. You can see the difference between in the images below. Edited photo currently being used https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ae/Robert_Earl_Hughes_Carnival.jpg The original unedited photo http://the-source.net/wp-content/uploads/1-28-523x514.jpg Just your average wikipedian (talk) 01:56, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you have a better photo that is legally available to WP, and that you have the rights to share, please upload it. The 2nd link perhaps does not work, as it shows on my browser only a portion of the image at the commons.Shajure (talk) 04:53, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, yes the comparison photo I used is cut off at the top and bottom, however it does show clearly that the photo currently being used has been stretched sideways to make the man look more spherical. I am not an expert on free use and copyright, but since the edited photo was able to be used without being taken down, I would assume that the image (both edited or unedited) is in free use? If so I would be happy to do some digging and find the uncropped unstretched image to replace the current one. Just your average wikipedian (talk) 05:33, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we can assume anything of the sort. It might well be appropriate to remove the current image.Shajure (talk) 10:46, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the link to the image.Shajure (talk) 10:55, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious claim about military service

[edit]

The source is Ripley's Believe It Or Not, but there is no link.

The two obituaries I found do not mention military service: https://groups.google.com/g/alt.obituaries/c/HMFU69BSSQI?pli=1 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/7051577/robert-earl-hughes

This article about him that doesn't mention military service: https://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/June-2001/Heavy/

Here is the likely explanation for the incorrect information: Robert had to register for the draft in 1944 but could not go to the registration office. They came to his home instead.

>That year, 1944, he had to register for the draft, but his parents told the draft board that they had no way of getting Robert Earl to registration in Mount Sterling, 12 miles away. So the draft board went to Fishhook to register him.

>Stories about the unusual draft accommodations made papers in Quincy and other nearby cities - the first time Robert Earl made headlines. The stories said Robert Earl, likely the largest man to ever register for the draft

https://www.oakridger.com/story/news/2008/03/13/world-s-heaviest-man-world/46240427007/

There is no evidence I could find beyond that of him actually serving, and that seems extremely unlikely. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikiwokowakawukuweke (talkcontribs) 16:22, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
