Too much myth -- not enough facts

[edit]

Hi. I see this:

"Savatthi was located on the banks of the river Aciravati (now called the Rapti river). It was the capital city of the kingdom of Kosala, and its king was called Pasenadi, who was a disciple of Buddha. It is a beautiful city with vast amounts of agriculture and diversity. Buddhaghosa says[1] that, in the Buddha's day, there were fifty seven thousand families in Savatthi, and that it was the chief city in the country of Kasi Kosala, which was three hundred leagues in extent and had eighty thousand villages. He stated the population of Sávatthi to have been 180 million.[2] The road from Rajagaha to Savatthi passed through Vesali, and the Parayanavagga[3] gives as the resting places between the two cities: Setavya, Kapilavatthu, Kusinara, Pava and Bhoganagara. Further on, there was a road running southwards from Savatthi through Saketa to Kosambi. Between Saketa and Savatthi was located Toranavatthu.[4]"

The figures and numbers cited seem wildly implausible from a historical/archaeological/scientific point of view (there aren't even any cities today that have a population of 180m!). Is there any serious archaeological, etc. research that would give a more realistic view of the history of this area? I notice that this is treated as though it is historical. There isn't even a qualifier like that it's mythic, or similar, any expression of any skepticism. But the pumped-up numbers just don't ring true. mike4ty4 (talk) 02:31, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

SravastiShravastiŚrāvastī (श्रावस्ती) is the WP:RS IAST spelling for the ancient city. This also transliterates to Shravasti. Sravasti, on the other hand, is inaccurate. For an example from a reliable source, see p.284 of Upinder Singh's A History of Ancient and Medieval India which is cited in the article. The current disambiguation page at Shravasti is unnecessary as there are only two options and this article is clearly WP:PTOPIC. Cpt.a.haddock (talk) 11:45, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
