[edit]

I recently roll back someone's edit because -- the book has been banned; the entire second edition disappeared. And much of the first was destroyed.

text of the book?

[edit]

This is a perfect example of a book that should be part of project gutenberg. The book was banned and/or destroyed when it was published and it is out of copyright. I searched gutenberg on 2009-03-04 and neither the author's full name nor the word banditti produce results, so I don't think it's there. Does anyone know of a digitized (scanned or OCR'ed) copy of the original (not the more recently published version, because the forward in that by Kittrell is still in copyright)? Update: There is a listing in google books for the original version, but the text is not available. And there are 5 copies of the original available through abe books for US$5,000 to US$10,000, which makes me wary of asking someone to scan an original copy. I think there is an original at the University of Wyoming, and I'll guess that some of the other western universities might have one too. You could put in some inquiries about having it digitized by Google, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Bottom line, if you want to read one, I would go for one of the newer editions.
