My Friend's 1986 Toyota Van Wagon[edit]

My friend and I were trying to figure out what kinda van she had today. We always thought it was a Toyota Freedom II but now we know. Related?[edit]

Is this related to the Toyota Lite Ace? It is a similar size anyway, though the front is a bit different. If true, would it be the equivalent of the Japanese spec Town Ace (a passenger version of the Lite Ace)? --Zilog Jones 19:41, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Van/Town Ace[edit]

We seem to have a problem with the naming in the article here. The article is called "Toyota Van", but the article introduces it as "Toyota Town Ace" in the first sentence, and "Van" later on. Does anyone know exactly where it was called what, so we can settle this? Thoughts? SchuminWeb (Talk) 15:54, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are many, many versions of this van depending on country of sale. There were, and still are, Toyota vans sold in countries outside the United States that are called the Town Ace, Lite Ace, Hiace, etc. Some of those vans, including vans sold in Canada at the same time this van was sold in the US, look almost identical to the US version van with minor differences. Same thing for Australia - some older versions of the Tarago, look identical to the US Version.

There are still Town Ace and Hiace vans being sold today, but they look completely different. The Van in the current picture at the top of the page is not a Town Ace or a Lite Ace, it's simply the Toyota Van - aside from the different versions sold in the US (cargo, 4WD, LE, DLX, etc.), that was it's only name. The term Wonderwagon came from some print ads and entered the popular lexicon, but was not the official name.

Perhaps there should be a separate article for the Town Ace and one for the 1984-1989 US issue of this van.

But it's the same basic vehicle, you're telling me? If that is the case, then it ought to remain as one article. This is what we did with Toyota Previa and Toyota Estima. These were basically the same car, and Previa was chosen for the title because it was the predominant name in the English-speaking world.

What we need to do here is to pick a name and go with it. Right now, the title says "Van", and the text says "Town Ace". For the record, I don't care which name takes the title. I'm mainly concerned with consistency here. If we're going to go with "Van", use "Van" throughout and mention the other names in passing. If we go for "Town Ace", fine. Use it consistently.
