50,000 is not an unrealistic number, but it is definitely not the lowest number in current scholarship. The number itself comes from an estimate by Bernard Fall, whose methodology has been subjected to vigorous and fair criticism by scholars. The low-end documented number is, according to declassified execution "quotas", field studies after the war, declassified archival documents from outside Vietnam, official statements by VCP officials abroad) is 10,000-15,000.
