I have added the qualifier "many" to the sentence "Sunnis consider him a prominent member of the Sahaba, or companions of Muhammad" inorder to prevent any blanket statements about Sunni Muslims. Since Suni Muslims are adiverse group of Muslims having many different points of view, it follows that many Sunni Muslim Scholars and laymen disagree on a whole host of issues. This is especailly true of so-called "controversial" issues. While many Sunnis are clearly anti-Shia or just hostile to this group, other Sunnis are more tolerant and even sympathetic to the views of the Shia. Most Sunnis who are aware of the history of Karbala, and not completely anti-Shia in thier sentiments regard Umar ibn Sa'ad as a vile and dispicable character, an enemy of Islam and the prophet's family.
