Merge from SISL, USISL

[edit]

I've merged SISL and USISL to United Soccer Leagues. Quarl (talk) 2007-02-28 07:02Z

Second Division?

[edit]

USL 1 is not the second division as FIFA would qualify it. There is promotion nor relegation so it's just a league that plays at a level below the MLS teams and above USL 2. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 02:07, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

While this is technically true under FIFA standards, it is accepted as the main league underneath the MLS by the USSF. The discussion on why promotion/relegation hasn't been implemented in American/Canadian soccer is better left in private, but obviously FIFA hasn't had too many issues with the way things are run, otherwise I'm sure they would have had discussions with the USSF and CSA by now. Possible Expansion section

[edit]

There should be a section like that because there are some large markets up for expansion. San Antonio is one example. The Spurs' owner Spurs Sports & Entertainment, Bexar County, and the USL have talked.--72.183.200.78 (talk) 14:20, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, there is mention of San Antonio and other cities being interested in hosting USL-1 teams on the USL-1 page. We probably won't have an actual section for it (at least on the general USL page, since it covers four pro/high amateur leagues, plus multiple youth leagues), however there are mentions of it on individual league pages. Possible section on NASL/owner revolt

[edit]

Some consideration should be given to adding a section (possibly once the USSF has decided upon a solution) about the revolt by the Team Owners Association, and the recreation of the North American Soccer League. Currently there are only four teams left in the USL1, due to folding, moving down to USL2, or moving to the new NASL. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Athos-mn (talkcontribs) 22:20, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Forget the NASL revolt. Do we retire this article and make a new one for the new USSL-controlled league where the USL and NASL will be nothing more than conferences? --Walter Görlitz (talk) 02:12, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, obviously we don't retire the article, since 1) the league is temporary, and 2) it only affects one of the USL's divisions. USL-2 would still be on the 2010 USL Season page, I'm just trying to figure out whether the link to where the USL-1 league would be would lead to the main USSF D2 page or to a season page for that league. USL League One and USL League Two

[edit]

Will the abbreviated names for USL League One and USL League Two be USL1 and USL2 or USL L1 and USL L2? SportsFan007 (talk) 15:51, 16 October 2018 (UTC)SportsFan007[reply]

They may be, or they may be even shorter. We should not speculate, we should instead wait for the sources to define the common name. Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:50, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ok, fair enough, thank you for your response!!! SportsFan007 (talk) 23:37, 16 October 2018 (UTC)SportsFan007[reply]
According to their style guide, they shouldn't be abbreviated at all:
League First reference Second reference
Overall United Soccer League USL
Division II USL Championship Championship
Division III USL League One League One
Developmental USL League Two League Two

United Soccer LeaguesUnited Soccer League – This is what the organization has been called for a few years now. They've never "officially" rebranded, but it was implied when USL PRO rebranded to USL in 2015. If you look at archives of uslsoccer.com from before vs after February 10, 2015 (the USL PRO-->USL rebrand date). Before that date, the site's primary purpose used to be for all of the United Soccer Leagues. After that date, it was primarily for just the professional USL league, but doubled as the organizing body's site. With the 2018 rebrand, it's become more explicit. They now have a logo that reads "United Soccer League" which is separate from USL Championship's logos, and is labeled in their brand guidelines as "The United Soccer League" or "USL Corporate". In general, I don't think the name "United Soccer Leagues" has been used in any primary or secondary sources for a little while now. IagoQnsi (talk) 05:08, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Support – I don’t see why this shouldn’t happen. SportsFan007 (talk) 05:18, 9 November 2018 (UTC)SportsFan007[reply]
Support – Especially since the page for the organization's top level has now been moved to its new name of USL Championship. — Dale Arnett (talk) 05:58, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Support – Yes, ASAP. — GrouchoPython (talk) 13:32, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Support move. Both official and common use are "League", singular. ONR (talk) 02:34, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
