Merging

[edit]

On my last edit, I said I merged this article with the info on the Netlink article (which doesn't even exist), but it's obvisouly the Uplink article. My bad. – Mackeriv 19:34, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Inclusion of {{stardock}} template

[edit]

Uplink: Hacker Elite is published and supported by Stardock in North America - well, they sell worldwide, but I would guess the majority of sales are in that region. Being a part of the TotalGaming.net service, it is in the {{Stardock}} template:

The question is, should this template be on this page, considering the product was not developed by Stardock? My view is that if it's in the template, the template should be on the page, but I can see the point of view that it might not be considered relevant enough. Any thoughts? GreenReaper 16:39, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Stardoc template is a bit too vague to work out what they did for Uplink, which is as small as distro it in America. I say that it should not be included as such; they already have a link as the american distro'er in the infobox, I don't see why it neeeds to be redundantly included as a huge template on the main page. NeoThermic 19:38, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The inclusion of this template looks like an advertisement to me. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 85.0.17.87 (talk) 18:09, 20 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]
Lose the template. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.246.66.15 (talk) 16:59, 16 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Update

[edit]

I added another screenshot, I tried to add more but they're all 'corrupted or extension wrong' apparently. Page is generally prettier. Links better, some info. VJ Emsi 18:33, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hack!

[edit]

(Shocked gasp)! The page about a hacking game has been hacked! Look here and snigger at the silly person. --Kizor 04:32, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pwned? VJ Emsi 12:09, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Font

[edit]

Added a note about fonts used. VJ Emsi 14:50, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

... and it's gone. OK, fine... VJ Emsi 00:32, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

... I was totally wrong. Sorry... VJ Emsi 00:32, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The font looks like a slightly modified version of the Colony Wars font. I think that is worth mentioning.

Music

[edit]

Tracked down most of the music online and posted them. I love the songs myself, I have all of them. :-) VJ Emsi 18:47, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to download the music just now. Several of the links were nearly unusable because they linked to reviews, whose actual download links were broken. Searching for the filenames on the Mod Archive did get me to the files, but not only are they in the old s3m format, my first few attempts to convert them to a format such as ogg, wav, or mp3 all failed! Has anyone got converted versions of them? --Kris Schnee 23:14, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Person who keeps vandalizing the Music section by trying to enter non-factual 'original research' while linking to sources which disavow his claims is now trying to hack into accounts at amp.dascene.net website to make his own 'published source'. Unfortunately his IP address was logged during his 12:09 AM attempt on April 16,2013: IP: 72.46.221.74. Same IP address he is using to vandalize the music section here. Bad form old boy. May have to ban his IP block from Wiki — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.134.179.231 (talk) 12:03, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This person (known to us as 72.46.221.74) is doing that same thing again and again. He is claiming to be the author of the music (see here) which probably violates the rules of wikipedia about impartial/neutral point of view.
On top of that, the list here must have the information given by the game at the time of its release; if the game credits the author with a name then it's that name that goes in this article; in the scope of this article it's completely irrelevant if the person changes the name later.
I will revert his changes and hope we can avoid the hassle of asking for him to be banned.
Aisteco (talk) 18:54, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Once again same person vandalizing, though this time linking to a different source, a web site which allows anyone to create an account and lay claim to authorship of any MOD music they want, without legal verification of said claim. According to the owner of Amiga Music Preservation, this same person and same IP was caught trying to falsely claim authorship and ownership of this same batch of music last month, and was publicly outed as a fraudster. Maybe an attempt to gain monetarily from a future Android/iPhone release of Uplink? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.184.80.169 (talk) 02:53, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've checked out this link from the revision history talk: ftp://ftp.scene.org/mirrors/hornet/music/songs/1996/t/tl-impul.zip - and that zip file does contain positively identifying information on the authorship of "Timelord." The ftp.scene.org mirror of the old hornet archive is a pretty well-known and legitimate source for demoscene releases in the 1990's. I'm not sure that I would call this vandalism or fraud if the name is genuine and verifiable there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.136.105.25 (talk) 06:48, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As previously stated, the list here must have the information given by the game at the time of its release; if the game credits the author with a name then it's that name that goes in this article; in the scope of this article it's completely irrelevant if the person changes the name later. Someone claiming to be the author, and therefore non-neutral violates the rules of Wikipedia about impartial/neutral point of view. Changing your IP address to vandalize a Wiki article repeatedly, and to give yourself bogus 2nd party irrelevant "credibility" using easily public-altered, non-factual and non-authoritative sources is just going to end with my putting a lock on this article to prevent future vandalism.
First of all, the information given by the game at its release does not match what is listed here. These titles were tracked down and posted here by a third party VJ Emsi 18:47, 23 April 2006 (UTC) as stated above. Skaven's real name was not included in the official release. Second of all, the hornet archive mirror at ftp.scene.org is not alterable by the public, period. Impulse.txt within the tl-impul.zip from 1996 clearly states that Timelord's real name is Robert Gergely. After some investigation it has been revealed that your IP address (173.184.80.169) traces back to Trinity, TX; and your name (withheld) matches the person who also tried to claim ownership of the Timelord material in 2006 on the AMP site by submitting a false interview form - which is why AMP admins are remaining neutral and have removed all Timelord identity information on the site, again. Interestingly enough, yours is the only IP block that is vehemently removing the real name credit, over and over. One has to question your motivations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.46.221.74 (talk) [reply]
For the sake of completeness, the people who removed the possible alternative name for Timelord are: 173.184.80.169 , 173.184.82.196, 173.184.43.123 , 173.184.19.109 , 64.134.179.231 , Aisteco .
Aisteco (talk) 18:35, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
173.184.*.* is a windstream dynamic IP netblock, it's the same person. 64.134.179.231 also resolves to Texas and is highly likely to be him as well. This guy is the only one talking about baseless "account hacking" at amp.dascene.net from this IP and references the same site later from 173.184.80.169 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.46.221.74 (talk) 18:46, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've done some research, so here's some confirmation that Robert Gergely is indeed the real author of these tunes: http://sagamusix.de/other/timelord/ --217.88.248.13 (talk) 11:47, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Patch

[edit]

The article mentions a 1.31a patch. Where is it? The latest one I see on the uplink site is 1.31 from way back in 2002. --Phoenix Hacker 01:07, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The patch was announced in a topic in the news forum. Patch Testing for more info. NeoThermic 18:00, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WTF

[edit]

Why has most of the stuff been deleted? This is an old version of the article... VJ Emsi 08:35, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Steam

[edit]

The Game is now distrubuted over Steam!

The statement that it has been released over Steam is under the 'Hacker Elite' royalties section. The Steam version is in fact not the 'Hacker Elite' version, while all other releases listed in that section are. Instead of creating an entirely new section, I'm moving the info to the introduction - AlKing464 11:59, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

People are still adding Steam info to the Hacker Elite section. If there is relevant info on the competition between the legitimate and 'Hacker Elite' versions then add it, or if you would like to create a section on its various distributions then do so, but otherwise Steam is not relevant in that section. I've added a warning to that effect on the page. (<!-- like so -->)- AlKing464 08:12, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Game Tap

[edit]

Isn't it worth posting that Uplink is also avalable on Turner Broadcastings Game Tap service

Controversy

[edit]

I tagged the sentence in the 'Style' section relating to controversy for a source. I've been following the game since it's first demo and never encountered any controversies. If someone can provide sources to back up a claim of controversy then fine. But if they can't, I will remove the sentence in one week from now. The Kinslayer 15:06, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nakatomi?

[edit]

Perhaps it's worth mentioning the introduction of the LAN systems in a patch? - AlKing464 06:34, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spoiler warning?

[edit]

Should the plot be marked with a spoiler, even though it is rather superficial? --Safe-Keeper 21:48, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No need. "Spoiler warnings are usually redundant when used in 'Plot', 'Synopsis' or (fictional) 'History' headings of any sort in articles whose subject is fictional." See Wikipedia: Spoiler - AlKing464 03:36, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Darwinia?

[edit]

People who have played the game would know that the idea of a digitally evolving consciousness (Revelation) is similar to Introversion's next game, Darwinia. Just pointing this out. Trivia section?
