Old talk

[edit]

I moved Kdbrous' reflections about the capitalisation of 'Waltz' here since it has nothing to do with the dance itself. He is what he wrote: "In the English language, only proper nouns and proper adjectives are capitalized. The word "waltz" is not a proper noun in the English language when used in an article as this one. The correct spelling is "Viennese waltz" with "waltz" lower case. "Waltz" is only capitalized when it is the first word of a sentence or is part of the title of an article, book, song, etc." Krueschan 18:22, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All capitalized words are proper names. "Viennese Waltz" is a proper name, just as Empire State Building. Mikkalai 20:01, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)

---

I have included a translation of the German article I have written about the Viennesse Waltz as the "History" section. There are some things which I couldn't cope with and/or which I couldn't link properly:

  • "Welttanzprogramm" translates to "world dance program", a set of dances made up in 1963 as basis of European dance practice.
  • Pjotr Iljitsch Tschajkowski. I didn't have time to search for the proper link but I guess it is there.
  • French Waltz is - you guessed it - a French version of waltzes. I don't know if the name exists in English dance tradition.
  • "Deutscher Tanz" translates to "German dance". It is a traditional German dance which I couldn't find any articles about.
  • Karl von Mirkowitsch is not really important and may be excluded from the links list.
  • There are two persons called Johann Strauß: father and son. BOTH are well-known composers, I only found the elder one.

I didn't delete any part of the article, I only rearranged the existing sections. It is up to you to decide whether the stub shall be removed or not. --213.6.118.195 17:15, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Folk Dance Style Viennese Waltz:

[edit]

The following chaotic piece removed from the article.

This folk dance version of The Viennese has made a quiet comeback for the last 2 generations in Cleveland Ohio U.S.A as detailed on pg. 12 of the March 24, 2005 weekly Slovenian newspaper AMERICAN HOME (AMERISKA DOMOVINA), 6117 St Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44103-1692 ph 216-431-0628 - fax 216-361-4088 James Debevec - Editor. Local professional ballroom dance instructor Mitzie Waring of Ed & Mitzie Waring Dance company of North Olmsted Ohio, as referenced to in the newspaper article as giving credence to the existence of this version. It is possible there is more Slovenian Folk Dancing, aka the Viennese to Ethnic Bands, going on in Cleveland Ohio than anywhere else in the world. Reason is in THE CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER's 6-5-04 article "Strengthening Pride of Cleveland Slovenes..." by writer Robert Smith where he explains the greatest number of Slovenes (60,000-80,000) immigrated to the Cleveland area (and brought the Slovenian Waltz with them, preserved it and dance it many times a week to this day). The Polka Hall of Fame in Euclid Ohio, also has this dance named "The Cleveland Style" as the 'Cleveland Slovenian' Frankie Yankovic brought everyday Americans into the ballrooms after WWII and then carried this waltz (with his music and this nick-name for his style) around the world. "The Cleveland Style" name stuck (aka Folk Dance Style Viennese Waltz aka The Slovenian Waltz) and is now documented in The Cleveland Polka Hall of Fame's records but it is synonymous with 'Folk Dance Style Viennese Waltz'.

I (or you) will extract a decent info from this piece of promo and will try to add something useful, like the actual description of the dance; possibly a separate article. mikka (t) 18:54, 27 July 2005 (UTC) ... not to say that "Folk Dance Style Viennese Waltz" expression is not found by google. mikka (t) 18:57, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Musical Form

[edit]

Apologies for making a major revision on this without consultation. The musical form of the viennese waltz is at least as important as the dance, and as such I though it appropriate to inclide that section. If any changes need to be made (I;m not very happy with some of my phrasing) please feel free to do so. Ck lostsword 20:36, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

placement of beats

[edit]

Common performance standard of Viennese waltz requires the 2nd beat of the 3/4 bar to be played slightly early, and the 3rd slightly late. Could someone add to the article the origins/reason for this practice? (I don't know why it is!) 87.113.29.44 (talk) 18:46, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Any references? 00:16, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Illustration

[edit]

Apparently we don't have a photo of a couple doing the Viennese Waltz in Commons. The illustration in the text is of a couple who are obviously not dancing the VW. They are dancing the international standard tango. The closeness of the hold, the position of the girl's left hand, the position of the feet... Sorry, but there it is. Macdonald-ross (talk) 13:26, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Came here to make just this comment, but I see I'm nearly two years late! Surely we can find a waltz image of equal quality to illustrate the waltz article. –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 05:21, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=viennese+waltz&l=commderiv&ct=0&mt=all&adv=1, particularly http://www.flickr.com/photos/flickr-rickr/406015783/. 24.45.42.125 (talk) 05:16, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Now we've got an image of what might be a (Slow) Waltz, but it doesn't look like a Viennese at all to me. The step is far to big, and they're too low down. Still no real Viennese Waltz photo? --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 16:10, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Viennese WaltzViennese waltz – Per WP:NCCAPS, MOS:CAPS, MOS:MUSIC, WP:CONSISTENCY and WP:USEENGLISH. All other waltz-related articles are now using lower-case, except where the word occurs in a proper name like the song "Missouri Waltz". Viennese waltz is not the title of a waltz (in the musical composition sense, like "The Blue Danube Waltz") or any other unique work, like a piece of choreography; it's a general categorization of folk dances (non-trademarked, no known creator), and thus is necessarily a common noun. In specialized dance works, virtually all dance-related terminology is frequently capitalized, but this has no bearing on Wikipedia, which follows our style manual, not that of a dance magazine. The fact that in German it's capitalized as Waltz is irrelevant; that language capitalizes all nouns, while this word has been fully assimilated into English for centuries. We don't capitalize other assimilated German loanwords like strudel or angst, either. And "Viennese waltz" is not a German phrase, anyway (the German name is Wiener Walzer).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  14:09, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note: Pushkin Waltzes (Prokofiev) is not included, despite looking superficially like a descriptive common-noun phrase, because it's conventionally treated as the de facto title of the untitled collected works: "the Pushkin Waltzes, Op. 120". Also, the Waltz Suite (Op. 110), Sixteen Waltzes (Op. 39), and the Mephisto Waltzes are all parallel cases (though the articles are not consistently italicizing and do not have consistent titles – some cleanup for WP:WikiProject Classical music to deal with at their leisure). PS: I'm listing this for full RM because someone or other objected to a speedy move several years ago, I think. I don't mind another entry in the consensus record against over-capitalization of this stuff. >;-)
  • Side observation: The amount of rampant over-capitalization in dance-related articles on WP is a real mess. I've partially cleaned up a bunch of them today but there are hundreds more. Most of them apply capitals to virtually all dance terms, and they typically have a lot of other problems; some have barely been touched in over a decade.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  14:09, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Musical form?

[edit]

This article is about the dance, which is fine, but I actually came here looking for information about the musical form "Viennese waltz". There really isn't any information about that in this article, and I've not found an article about the form. If there is one, it would be appropriate to link to it from here. There also might be good reason to have a "disambiguation page".

If there is no article about the musical form "Viennese waltz", someone should create one.

Agreed - that's is why I also came to this page. In fact earlier on the talk page, someone commented that they'd added just such a section, perhaps we could go a (long way) back through the page history and get the text to form the basis of a new article? 90.196.67.198 (talk) 20:47, 9 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The best Wikipedia can provide at the moment seems to be Waltz (music). --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 09:19, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
