"Rename to Science Fiction/Fantasy Pulp Magazine"[edit]

Many of the magazines listed here are either both fantasy and science fiction or simple majority fantasy magazines such as Unknown and Weird tales. Though most magazines published both genres indiscriminately it wouldn't hurt to simple rename this navbox to include both genres. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shallowgravy (talk • contribs) 19:51, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"The Thrill Book"[edit]

"The Thrill Book" has been removed from the "ScienceFictionPulpMagazines" Template with the statement that "Per Tymn/Ashley, TTB wasn't really an sf magazine".

That is a fair assessment; the magazine was more of an adventure magazine with a strong weird/occult slant and some science-fiction added during the second half of its run. However, other weird fiction magazines which published little SF such as "Strange Tales" and "Unknown" are included in this template. All three publications are listed in the 2nd edition of "The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction", and the first volume of Mike Ashley's "The History of the Science Fiction Magazine" also covers "The Thrill Book".

So I think it's only fair to include "The Thrill Book" alongside "Weird Tales", "Unknown" and "Strange Tales" in this template (unless someone wants to create a separate template for horror/fantasy pulp magazines). 79.97.34.244 (talk) 00:38, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree it's a bit of an arbitrary dividing line. If I were to defend the status quo, I'd say that Weird Tales and Unknown are widely regarded as key magazines in the development of sf, and they certainly did include a fair amount of straightforward sf. Strange Tales is a bit harder to defend, and perhaps if it stays in then Thrill Book should too. I suppose you could say that anything published only prior to 1926 can't possibly be an sf magazine if Amazing is the first one.
I think perhaps a weird/horror pulp template would be a better solution; most of the magazines in Tymn/Ashley would presumably be in one or the other, though there are some you could argue should be in both. Fantasy is harder; perhaps it just gets categorized as weird. What do you think? How about making a list of which title would be in which template? If we were to make a list of weird/fantasy pulp magazines, it would probably include:

  • "Weird Tales" (and maybe "Oriental Stories/Magic Carpet")
  • "Unknown"
  • "Famous Fantastic Mysteries" and its companion mags, "A. Merritt's Fantasy Magazine" and "Fantastic Novels"
  • "Fantastic Adventures"
  • "Strange Tales"
  • "Strange Stories"
  • "The Thrill Book"
  • "Tales of Magic and Mystery"
  • "Ghost Stories" the Macfadden Publications magazine
  • "The Witch's Tales" (based on the Radio show The Witch's Tale ).
  • And possibly the German rough paper fantasy magazine "Der Orchideengarten".

I'll look through some reference books today and see if there are others. I am tempted to leave the existing sf template alone, so that some of the magazines are duplicated -- I think it's hard not to include "Unknown" in the sf template, for example. I didn't include the German one; I was thinking of these templates as covering the English-language magazines, though if we have good sources for the others I suppose we could expand it.
