suffix2
[edit]Template:Current US state Chief Justices has each state code link to state name + "Supreme Court". This is fine in most states, because when incorrect, a redirect goes to the correct name.
Unfortunately, New York Supreme Court cannot be a redirect. I have introduced a kludge in the Template coding where suffix2 is used, if defined, as the suffix for New York. I'm sure there are "officially" better ways, where suffix is defined in a highly programmable way (not that I could figure it out), but since this template is only used in less than a dozen other templates, I think we should get by with a dead-simple kludge. - good idea, I changed it to NY_suffix, so we can add this for the other states as well. Frietjes (talk) 19:28, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- Do we want this? I believe the NY Supreme Court is the unique instance where the expected name cannot be a redirect, here and in the future, and as such, I think a dead-simple kludge is preferable to anything that "gets it right" at the cost of any amount of complexity. Not that I'm going to revert. Choor monster (talk) 20:46, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- yes, suffix2 makes me think of New York :) as far as complexity goes, the alternative uses no new parser functions. Frietjes (talk) 21:01, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- I agree suffix2 was a weak name.
- The complexity I'm thinking of is not regarding server load (a la WP:SLOW), but simple human maintenance issues. I mean, Template:United States topic potentially has the same issues, but unless it actually occurs, there's nothing to "fix". For example, Louisiana has parishes instead of counties, but unless Louisiana also has something called "counties" worth listing, a redirect suffices, and in fact that's what we have. See Template:U.S. Counties.
- On the other hand, your form encourages someone to go through these templates and link directly to the exact name. See State supreme court#List. (Note that some of the articles are actually under the wrong name.) Choor monster (talk) 21:26, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- doesn't seem to be happening with {{Europe topic}}, which allows one to completely change any link. Frietjes (talk) 22:52, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, I meant that changing the links directly counts as a positive for your version. Choor monster (talk) 23:07, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- oh, yes I did misread what you wrote. on further reflection, I think we can just have one XX_link parameter to override the link. seems less complicated, and more flexible. Frietjes (talk) 01:21, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
