[edit]

In the sandbox for this template, I tweaked the bolding/italics to better emphasize the main point of the notice (that the page is a sandbox) as the most prominent element. Feel free to let me know how it looks; I will plan to implement shortly if there are no concerns. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 17:01, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

 Done per silent consensus. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:28, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Seems fine to me, though "This is not an encyclopedia article" being in bold is also fine.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  01:24, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please add {{Sandbox heading/Tabs}} (and protect that template) to make navigating between the different sandboxes easier. We should get users to experiment and play around with different functions in the various sandboxes and their own sandbox. It also has a link to "test Wikipedia" for experimentation with user scripts, etc. Awesome Aasim 03:43, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Most newcomers only need one sandbox to experiment in, so I'm not sure this would be useful. Sdkbtalk 05:10, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Deactivating for now because I got an objection, so I am now seeking consensus. Awesome Aasim 06:47, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Currently, two pages are in Category:Non-userspace pages using User sandbox. Both of them are in fact in userspace, but populate the maintenance category due to their use of demospace (with non-namespace parameters, i.e. not for their intended purpose, in both cases). As this appears to be both unintuitive for newcomers and complicating the cleanup of Category:Pages with templates in the wrong namespace, I propose that the demospace parameter be made so that it still shows the error message, but doesn't populate Category:Non-userspace pages using User sandbox if the page is still in userspace.

This could be done, for instance, by replacing <includeonly>[[Category:Non-userspace pages using User sandbox]]</includeonly> with <includeonly>{{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|User||[[Category:Non-userspace pages using User sandbox]]}}</includeonly>. @Chaotic Enby the non-userspace category is empty - is this still desired? --DannyS712 (talk) 00:50, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DannyS712 It's great that it's empty now, but it could still be an improvement to prevent sandboxes from incorrectly populating backlog categories in the future. Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 19:13, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please implement my changes in the Template:User sandbox/sandbox.

The reason for this change is to provide for convenient navigation between the different sandboxes on Wikipedia and a person's user sandbox.

Also, protect the navigation template after transclusion please. Awesome Aasim 23:20, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Partly completed: this is not the correct venue to protect a page. Please go to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection to request protection. In the meantime I have added |navbar=plain to the new navigation template to remove the  V ·· E  links. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 09:50, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I object to the addition of a navbox in this non-standard location. In addition to being a strange place for a navbox, it causes problems if this template is preceded by an indenting character such as : or *. If you want to put in a small list of other likely pages, that's fine, but not a whole navbox. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:28, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to agree. I don't see any value for example in having 10 images listed there, or 20 X templates for example. It's also strange to have a nested navigation template in a banner. Gonnym (talk) 08:34, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's consensus, and so  reverted. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 09:35, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let's discuss a little more.
I feel like there is a convenience aspect to having such a navbox in the sandbox. It makes jumping between sandboxes easier.
Maybe a "type" parameter would be good? One type could give just the two small links, another type could give the full navbox, and another type could give nothing. The default could then be set based on consensus. Awesome Aasim 15:08, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would not object to something like |type=expanded as an option. It should not be the default. If the expanded version contains a navbox, the documentation should explain that it is not compatible with any sort of indenting markup. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:25, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly, but the default should not include the clunky navbox. From a practicality standpoint, information banners are not the place where navbox fit best, and this addition, if it goes through, shouldn't retroactively impact all current use cases.
