Pokémon has 493 (as of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl) distinctive fictional species classified as the titular Pokémon. These creatures and entities reside throughout various locations of the fictional Pokémon universe and can be caught by humans designated as Pokémon Trainers often using devices called Poké Balls. These trainers use Pokémon for a variety of purposes, such as being pets and loyal companions and/or being pitted against other trained Pokémon in competitive Pokémon battles. Pokémon are potentially super-powered creatures that can employ a variety of talents such as generating fire or heat, martial arts, telekinesis, and so on. Through age and experience many of these species undergo a metamorphosis and transform into a similar but stronger specie in a process referred to as Pokémon evolution.
This is a selected listing of the new Pokémon announced for Pokémon Black and White, listed in alphabetical order.
Chillarmy[edit]

Chillarmy (チラーミィ), known as the Chinchilla Pokémon, brush each other with their tails as a greeting. They never fail to groom their tails clean.[1]
Mijumaru[edit]

Mijumaru (ミジュマル), known as the Sea Otter Pokémon, is one of the Starter Pokémon for Pokémon Black and White. It was first revealed as a silhouette on the May 9, 2010 episode of Pokémon Sunday.[2] It is by far the least popular of the starter Pokémon. [3][4] In an interview with Ken Sugimori, he stated that they were concerned on what to make Mijumaru evolve into. After watching sea otters at a zoo, he decided to make the third evolution based off a sea lion, with Mijumaru's shell turned into a sword.[5]

Pokabu (ポカブ), known as the Fire Pig Pokémon, is one of the Starter Pokémon for Pokémon Black and White. It was first revealed as a silhouette on the May 9, 2010 episode of Pokémon Sunday.[2] In an interview with Ken Sugimori, he stated that Pokabu's evolution would be Chinese style of design.[5]
Reshiram[edit]

On May 28, 2010, both the official Japanese and English Pokémon websites revealed names and designs of the two major Legendary Pokémon of these games, who also serve as the game version mascots: the White Yang Pokémon Reshiram (レシラム, Reshiramu) for Pokémon Black and the Black Yin Pokémon Zekrom (ゼクロム, Zekuromu) for Pokémon White.[6]
Tsutarja[edit]

Tsutarja (ツタージャ), the Grass Snake Pokémon, is one of the Starter Pokémon for Pokémon Black and White. It is smart and has a very cool demeanor. Its movements sharpen when it basks in plenty of sunlight.[7] It was first revealed as a silhouette on the May 9, 2010 episode of Pokémon Sunday.[2]
It is the most popular of the Starter Pokémon from Pokémon Black and White.[3][4] As such, it has been nicknamed "Smugleaf" by fans and has quickly become an internet meme.[8][9][10] In an interview with Ken Sugimori, he stated that Tsutarja's evolution would be Western style of design.[5]

On July 25, 2010, the episode of Pokémon Sunday revealed a silhouette of a new legendary Pokémon, which is to be revealed in the later part of the episode. Few hours later, the silhouette is revealed to be Victini (ビクティニ, Victini), the mirage legendary Pokémon, which was already shown in the preview trailer for the fourteenth Pokémon film, in the airing of the thirteenth Pokémon film. Victini is numbered #000 in the Isshu Pokédex. A Liberty Ticket (リバティチケット, Liberty Ticket) is needed to obtain Victini, which will be distributed from Sept. 18 to Oct. 18, through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. [11]

Zoroark (ゾロアーク), known as the Illusory Fox Pokémon, was the first Generation V Pokémon to be revealed. Its' name and other information were revealed February 10, 2009 on CoroCoro Comic scans.[12]
Japanese magazine CoroCoro Comic hinted that the evolution method for Zorua to become Zoroark may be different from that in previous games.[13] Zoroark is the title character of the upcoming movie Phantom Ruler: Zoroark[14][15]
Fan reactions to Zoroark have been mixed, but fairly positive.[15][16] Fellow Kotaku editor Brian Ashcraft described Zoroark's hair as being "truly awesome", jokingly comparing it to the hair of Gary Glitter's, Kishidan's, and Angelina Jolie's.[17]

Zorua (ゾロア), known as the Dark Fox Pokémon, was the second Generation V Pokémon to be revealed. Its' name and other information were revealed February 10, 2009 on CoroCoro Comic scans.[12]

Fan reactions to Zorua have been mixed, but fairly positive.[15][16] Kotaku editor Mike Fahey described Zorua as adorable, further adding that it was "small, fluffy, and thoroughly evil, much like a Pekingese".[12] Joystiq editor JC Fletcher described Zorua as smaller and cuter than Zoroark, but agreed with Fahey that Zorua looked evil.[14]
