Appointments Bi-Language ltd is a UK-based recruitment business that specialises in placing multilingual staff [1]. It is headquartered in Holborn, London.

History

[edit]

Appointments Bi-Language was formed in 1991 by Nicole Debson and Marie Eichler after the two had originally worked together at a secretarial recruitment agency[2]; they met in 1986 when Debson applied for a job at Eichler’s agency[3]. In January 1991, the UK was in deep recession, the Gulf War was just beginning, and the economy was depressed, though an investment of £3,000 each was made in to starting the business[4]. After initially concentrating on PAs and secretaries, the company’s focus on languages became crucial when the European Union was formally established in 1993[5].

In September 2006, Appointments Bi-Language won a major translation contract from Hong Kong-based QI. The contract was to translate QI's website articles from English into Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Indonesian, Cambodian and Portuguese. It also received requests from the Olympic Delivery Authority for the 2012 London Olympics.[6] In December 2006, Appointments Bi-Language was approached by Sony to test the effectiveness of its video conferencing technology in interviewing candidates who were based internationally. After the interview session the candidates offered opinions on the results and then French and German observers questioned them about the experience.[7]
