RUMAG (which is short for Rude Magazine) is a Dutch media company and apparel brand based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.[1]

History[edit]

The company was founded in October 2014 by Thijs van der Heide and Tim Degenaars.[2] RUMAG was started as a blog but the posts changed overtime were regular blog posts were shortened to quotes and shared on Facebook. As a result the company has gained a lot of popularity in The Netherlands. The quotes are written in their signature style, white text on a black background and white dots between each word. RUMAG produces quotes and slogans that are often humorous, sexually tinted, and rude.[3] These quotes have been featured on popular dutch TV shows, in magazines an on their own line of Tshirts. In June 2016, RUMAG became a publisher with VICE Digital Network and launched their own media platform that features entertainment, relationship and lifestyle tips and gives a glimpse into the story behind the famous quotes.[4][5] On December 1st 2016, dutch vlogger and comedian Nienke Plas joined the company to spear head the video platform and to become the new face of the company.[6][7][8] RUMAG shares it’s quotes and slogans daily on social media. On September 4th 2017, RUMAG entered into an agreement with dutch Prime-time Late-night Talk show RTL Late Night, whereby the show will close-off daily with a quote from RUMAG. In September 2017, RUMAG faced some controversy and as a result they received many tweets and emails critizing them after they created and offered a Tshirt design with the word 'STERF' (which means DIE in dutch).[9]

Popularity[edit]

RUMAG is has a large social media fanbase in the Netherlands. According to Dutch marketing research company Marketingfacts.nl, RUMAG is listed as the most powerful brand on Instagram in The Netherlands, as published in their Instagram Brand Monitor index.[10][11][12]
