[1]Barai is a hindu caste which claim brahmin lineage from their ancestors and is found mainly in Uttar Pradesh.They also use Chaurasiya as their surname. T word chaurasia means 84 which indicates there are 84 castes in this community which claim brahiminical lineage but with time have settles in various other occupations. Main gotra of this caste is Kashyap, Atri, Shandilya which are all BRAHMIN gotras. Barais occupy a fairly good social position and the legend gives them a Brahman ancestry. This is to the effect that the first Barai was a Brahman, whom God detected in a flagrant case of lying to his brother. His sacred thread was confiscated and, being planted in the ground, grew up into the first betel vine, which he was set to tend.
