I appreciate your kind words. I was asked by Tony Sidaway a few weeks back and then said I would accept, but have lately changed my mind. In a couple of weeks, I will be leaving for two weeks on vacation and maybe when I get back in mid November I may decide to go for it. I would expect it to bring out a lot of fireworks but would do nothing to defend myself against any negative opinions, aside from absolute slander. School Wiki

[edit]

Hi, thanks for asking me for my thoughts on this. As you can imagine, I and many other school inclusionists will (and have in the past) oppose the creation of a seperate Wiki most violently. I understand the desire of neutral parties and deletionists to see a different wiki where all of us school nuts can play on our own, but that is exactly the problem. To be frank, a School Wiki is only another way for deletionists to achieve their end of removing school articles from Wikipedia. I am not specifically categorizing you as a "deletionist", but you are (IIRC) one of "those who frequently nominates and/or votes to delete school articles on the basis of being a stub or 'non-notable'". I mean no offense, but there are a couple of problems when the proposal to excise school articles from Wikipedia by creating a sepearte Wiki comes from a well known "delete" voter (ie. it will never garner the support of the majority of the school inclusionist community). Secondly, at present, there is really no need for those of us who in good faith believe that school articles have a place on Wikipedia, to back off and consent to a seperate Wiki. We are "winning" the schools AfD debate by overwhelming margins. Some 90% of all school articles nominated to AfD are NOT deleted, there has not been a single verifiable, non-preschool school deleted by AfD since APRIL, and less than 5% of all high school arcticles have been closed as "no consensus" (the 95%+ portion of high schools in the last 6 months are closed as "KEEP"). So, with all due respect to your idea, not only do I personally oppose it on the grounds listed above, it is almost completely assured to garner little or no support amongst those who usually vote to keep schools as part of Wikipedia. A proposal to remove school articles from Wikipedia, by any other name, is still deletionism.--Nicodemus75 09:07, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi Aranda56, I have to say I thought it was a good idea since it will be the start of something more structured rather than grab bag of school articles that are out there at the moment. One thing I find particularly frustrating is that the keep at all costs crowd will often clean up a school listed for deletion but not always link it to the community or, visa versa, reference it from the appropriate school district/community. I find their claims hollow when I do not see them creating the network of information that will make the school contributions useful and more to the point visible. I have brought this up before but there was silence from the keepers. It seems to me they spend an unhealthy amount of time fighting the deletions. I think the proposal to set up a separate school wiki would solve that problem and allow the schoolwatch project to focus its considerable energy into the positive contribution of setting up the school network/pedia.
Personally, I am surprised they are not more aggressive at cleaning these articles up before they are nominated for deletion, that would be more constructive. They even have a list of new schools created but seem slow to respond to the poor one line efforts that most begin as on wikipedia. I suspect they might enjoy waiting for the deletion nomination before starting the clean up process since it allows them to score points with regard to how many schools are kept vs. deleted after they are nominated for deletion. They do seem to keep score and are quite vocal about it. If there was a separate wiki there would be no need to keep score and progress would be faster. At the moment schoolwatch is like a group trying to build a raft in shark infested waters. All their time is spent fighting off the sharks and no time is spent producing the product.
Currently the schoolwatch contributions seem to be mostly damage repair, although I have not researched this thoroughly. I have noticed that what really happens on the deletion nominations is that total garbage is nominated and then a devoted band schoolwatch members come in and write it properly. I think it is great that they do this but there are two other problems that might be more easily addressed in a wiki schools project:
  • Rewritten school articles are probably not monitored that carefully, so there could be an increase in sophisticated vandalism. It would not be hard to change (pseudo update) these school articles with bogus information. I have tried to make this point here.
  • Garbage school articles that are not nominated for deletion do not get cleaned up. It seems that the schoolwatch use the deletion nomination as a heads up for starting to improve the article. New school article in a school wiki will be tagged for improvement imeddiatly so they don't languish as stubs.
Just my 2 cents David D. (Talk) 00:42, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

Don't do it yet, Aranda. I can think of at least half a dozen people who would oppose you just based on the fact that you've only been here two months, and your previous RfA was only a couple of weeks ago. Wait another month, then sweep the votes with a 90% approval! :) Owen× 03:00, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
  • Thanks I was planning to nominate in November 8th when I get the one month hit of my last RFA and not now which makes it in 2 and a half months also which I think a few passed before around that time. I could nominate in November 21th as well which is my 3 month anniversity but im just to impatient :) --JAranda | watz sup 03:05, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
I know, it's hard to wait, but keep in mind that very few were able to pass after less than three months. I'd give it the 3 more weeks, then go for it. Owen× 03:09, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
