Intermediate Phase Orientalizing Sima

[edit]
Lateral sima at Poggio Civitate, depicting a frieze of a lion's head.

At Poggio Civitate, lateral sima is used on the three Orientalizing Complex buildings. On each building, lateral sima is used along the lower, lateral edge of the roof. The most intact examples are found in association with the OC2/Workshop. Each unit of the modular lateral sima measures 0.54 meters, which is the same unit used to construct each of the three buildings.[1] The lateral sima bears decoration depicting female heads and hand-made feline spouts that have an opening within them to allow for water to flow from the gutter system.[2] The depicted female heads and feline spouts represent Potnia Theron, a fertility divinity[3]. The decoration on the lateral sima could have been painted at one point in time.
