Katya Muromtseva (Russian: Катя Муромцева, Екатерина Львовна Муромцева; born 12 may 1990) is a Russian artist.

Biography[edit]

Born on May 12, 1990, Katya Muromtseva is an artist with a diverse educational background. She graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2012, and later pursued studies at the Rodchenko School of Photography and Multimedia, where she was mentored by Igor Mukhin. Muromtseva's artistic journey took her through various residencies, including stints at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art (2018 - 2019) and WHW Akademija in Zagreb (2020). She further enriched her experience through an internship under the Fulbright program from 2020 to 2022. Currently based in the USA since 2021, Muromtseva shares her expertise as a faculty member at the School of the Arts, Virginia Commonwealth University. ^[1]

With a career spanning from 2015, Muromtseva has been actively showcasing her works. Her solo exhibitions have graced venues such as the XL Gallery at the Moscow Contemporary Art Center Vinzavod, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. Her art has also been displayed internationally, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp, the Art Front Gallery in Tokyo, and the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial.^[2]

Muromtseva's contributions to the art world have been recognized with accolades such as the Present Continuous program of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp^[3] and the Innovation Award in 2020.^[4] Her impact extends beyond the art sphere, earning her a place in the Forbes Russia "30 under 30" list in the same year.^[5]

Exploring diverse mediums like installation, video, and graphics, Muromtseva's work blurs the lines between documentary and imagination. She describes her artistic pursuit:

Through my practice I am looking for the new forms of existence within the hierarchical social and cultural systems of society. I am interested in the narrative where scholarly and artistic imagination overlap. I imagine the possibility to renew historical narratives, to reconfigure methods of exhibition display, to share the means of production with other artists, the possibility of actual solidarity.
