ANI

[edit]
Moved from User talk:Andrybak

Hi andrybak, On 26 September I attempted use archiver to archive a bunch of closed discussions at WP:AN/I. Please see Special:Diff/1247859382. Instead of archiving to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1167 which would have been the correct behaviour, archiver archived to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents/Archive 1 creating a new page in the process. Is that something that can be corrected in the script so that it behaviours correct in future for WP:AN/I? TarnishedPathtalk 11:12, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

TarnishedPath, thank you for your interest in Archiver.
WP:ANI has a custom archive naming scheme. I don't plan to add special support because User:lowercase sigmabot III creates archives there just fine. Manual intervention isn't really needed for archiving sections at ANI.
Note, that the user of Archiver is supposed to check the destination page with their own eyes before proceeding – see User:Andrybak/Scripts/Archiver#Instructions. —andrybak (talk) 11:20, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrybak thanks for your response and yes I should have taken more care. TarnishedPathtalk 11:23, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that ANI naming system is odd and as far as I know (I only stumbled on that stray archive because I was looking for an old discussion), your approach should usually work and it's usually unnecessary to check the source page's |archive= and |counter=. There are a few pages that don't have a space before the number, though the examples I've found probably/definitely shoudn't be manually archived anyway e.g. Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive362, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement/Archive339. Still, would it be possible and useful to present a message when creating an "Archive 1", along the lines of "creating brand new archive #1 - really?"? NebY (talk) 12:40, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
NebY, in such cases the script shows a notification "Cannot find the first archive subpage". In skins I've tested, the notification appears in the top right corner. I could make it more insistent and harder to miss, if you want. —andrybak (talk) 15:55, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! No, that all sounds quite right and proper; apologies for not trying it myself before opining. NebY (talk) 15:58, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've tweaked how the error messages are shown. It's not the original drastic idea I had in mind when writing my previous message, but rather a middle ground to improve the UX in these cases without distracting the user. —andrybak (talk) 16:32, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nice one; the drastic method might have got annoying but that looks graceful - so far as I follow it, which isn't far. :) NebY (talk) 17:06, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
