WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3. United States WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

A rather cool West Virginian

Hey- Keeping in tune with all things West Virginia, I believe there s a raer important one, we could both do and/or learn about. His name was Jenkin B. Jones, the namesake of Jenkinjones, West Virginia....So whats the deal? He was one of the founders of the Pocahontas Fuel Company which pretty much was the Pocahontas Coalfield. His influence was felt in 3 counties, in 2 states, the stock cert from 1907, in the article I have updated for the coal field was for him. His son sold it after his death. The article easily met the criteria, and I was grasping at straws to find components that needed fixing or greater elaboration. You certainly have a knack for this trade craft, which doesn't leave a reviewer much room for critique! As for Hampshire County, I'm working on improving existing articles before continuing to draft new ones! I really don't have that much to do with DYK; I never come into WP via the main page, and I wasn't even aware of the existence of DYK until somebody nominated one of my articles. If I could come up with something quirky or unusual, I might try to write it up for DYK, but there's really nothing I can think of for St. Leonard's. Also, if I nominated articles for DYK, I'd have to do reviews of other people's nominations... Ammodramus, I've never been very good at writing really catchy hooks, despite somehow getting 72 DYK hooks passed! It's a rather simple process. You create your article's nomination subpage at Template talk:Did you know, and once you've completed filling out all the required fields, you post your subpage link at Template talk:Did you know. (I usually try to have my QPQ review completed before this page). If the nominee article is your own, you must of course complete a QPQ review, but if it is not, a QPQ review is not necessary. (I usually go ahead and review another article anyway). Once your article has been reviewed and approved by another editor, its hook is automatically moved to Template:Did you know/Queue where it awaits its appearance on the front page! I'm somewhat on the fence about whether Old Baldy is too brief to be GA material. Did you think that it might be? Having done a few reviews and seen how much work they can be, I'm loath to nominate something unless I'm tolerably sure that it'll pass without too much more work. Ammodramus, Old Baldy meets much of the criteria for Good Article status. I would recommend expanding the lead to include more content from the history and promotion/protection sections. GA criteria is less concerned with the size of the article, but with how well an article defines, describes, and explains its subject. You may want to further divide the History section into subsections. This article would be scooped up in no time for GA review and would make for an excellent DYK hook! -- Caponer (talk) 13:59, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Old Pine Church

I'll spend a little time looking at Old Pine Church; since I'm not doing a GA review, I'll feel somewhat freer to edit it. By all means, revert if it looks like I'm getting too WP:BOLD.

One thing you might want to standardize: article or not? "Old Pine Church" or "the Old Pine Church"? I see both usages in the article. I'd weakly lean toward the no-article version, since OPC seems to be a proper noun—I'm thinking about how I'd write "The Presbyterian church was built in 1914" vs. "First United Presbyterian Church was built in 1914." Up to you, though.

Think there's an error in the references section: for Scaffidi (2012), you've got the title as "NRHP Reg'n Form: OPC", whereas it actually appears to be about Capon Chapel (related to your username, I assume). Did you paste in the wrong URL?

Ammodramus, no need to link to WP:BOLD--you should know by now that I seek your guidance especially because you are WP:BOLD! I'll go through and make the corrections, as it should be "Old Pine Church" throughout the prose. As you can see, I'm also working to expand Capon Chapel, and I somehow pasted its SHPO link into the reference for OPC. I've double checked the rest of the source links to ensure that I didn't do that with the other references.   • Still working with this article. I'm beginning to think that Scaffidi could have been improved by going through somethhing like GA review: I'm finding some annoying ambiguities. In particular, the paragraph that spans pp. 7-8 is problematic: I'm not sure where she's referring to the current church, and where to one that apparently existed earlier on the site. In even more particular, was Leatherman ministering before 1838, possibly even as early as his move in 1821? Does Bittinger shed any light on this? Ammodramus (talk) 15:05, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
Ammodramus, I literally just laughed out loud for a few minutes upon reading the first sentence of your above message! Yes--most of the NRHP registration forms I've come across could use a GA review. I believe most of the problematic paragraph refers to the current church building, but Scaffidi does refer briefly to the earlier structure that stood on the same site. She refers to the earlier structure as a church in one instance, and as a meeting house in another. If there are burial sites in the cemetery dating to as early as 1759, one would think the earlier structure was a church. Perhaps the following is true: there was a need for a permanent church in the community and one was built at that site "as early as around 1814, and possibly as early as 1792." (and really, possibly as early as 1759, but we won't go there). Then a new church is built on that site in 1838 (why the previous church is replaced after only 24 years of service, we don't know) after the land was deeded to the group of trustees by the Pomkrotzes. It was this current 1838 church that was meant to serve as a "union church." Leatherman was the earliest resident minister of the 1838 church. Unfortunately, Bittinger does not shed additional light on these subjects. I may have to do some digging to fill in these holes during my next research adventure in Hampshire County! There is no solid date or decade, but we know that it was in the middle of the 18th century. I'll see if I can find additional sources to back this up. An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
