Signature does not display properly[edit]
(copied from the help desk) I have been a Wikipedian for a couple of years now, but I have only fairly recently (possibly since the last time I modified my preferences) found a frustrating problem that won't go away. Every time I sign a comment, the signature is incorrectly displayed. Everything looks correct, but somehow it is not interpreted the way it should be. I'm sure it is something I'm doing wrong. I must have something typed incorrectly in my "nickname" preferences. The really odd thing is that when I copy the text directly from the preview down into the edit box (adding the brackets back to the first part, since the first part does work), the thing displays perfectly. Oh, yeah, good job! Yeah, I was going to get it to it sooner or later...I'll see if I can expand his and Aravis's page a bit more though. Yeah, the Prince Cor page redirects to the Shasta page, so whatever's Prince Cor's page shouldn't matter, right? Sort of confused on what you're saying, but I'll see what I can do. Oh yeah, and I'll erase it, since I didn't create his own page :). I cross it off, if I was the one who had done it. - I will try to expand the Cor page as much as I can...I think I have too many pages that I should really start to cross off in my 'To-Do List' clickie!. And yeah, I have Mozilla Firefox, I'm just so used to IE, I can't really start switching off to Mozilla right away...it's weird. Graham Maxwell[edit]
Hi! I am enlisting your help as one of the people listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Seventh-day_Adventist_Church. The Seventh-day Adventist Church page has recently come under a protection order after an edit war to do with the theology of Graham Maxwell. As an upshot of this war, two users have been blocked. I personally do not understand the issue relating to Graham Maxwell, and as such would like your comments, regardless of whether you know much about the issue or not, on Talk:Seventh-day Adventist Church. Regarding your inquiry[edit]
Thanks for the note re: the poet page move, which is wise. Regarding Netoholic, should I assume you've read Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Netoholic and Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Netoholic 2? I'd say your descriptions of interaction with Netoholic remind me very much of his traditional modus operandi here...I'm sorry to hear that he's an SEWikipedia admin if he hasn't learned to work within consensus and be constructive. I'm afraid I have little advice...I haven't worked much with him, especially recently. I'd encourage you to contact the users identified as his "mentors" in the Netoholic 2 case to see if they found any successful strategies for working with him...failing that, I'd say it may be time for the SEWikipedia to develop a good dispute resolution policy (unless one exists already...forgive my ignorance concerning the SE project). Personally I agree with your stated and implied positions on how SE should function, but of course I have no involvement with the project, and I doubt my arrival now would be seen as anything but "ganging up" by Netoholic. If I can assist in any way that I'm not seeing right now, please do let me know...I'm happy to provide some input into how the dispute resolution process has worked here as a former insider (and a bit of a maverick, at that), should that be helpful to whatever needs to happen at SE. /ch/[edit]
Hi. The piece about the evolution of /ch/ was more a joke than anything else. But there's a little bit of truth behind it. If you travel across north-west France from Normandy you'll find various points where phonemes change in the local dialects. One of these is the change from /k/ to /sh/ in words such as "chat" , cat. There are others too. According to what I read, many years ago, these lines correspond to various ages in French history - when areas were poilitically isolated from each other, and if it was for long enough, they developed different phonemes. The /k/ pronunciatio is Germanic, the /sh/ is a later development. Another interesting one is the French rolled /r/, which apparently began as an affectation in upper-class French speech in the 18th century, and then was spread amoung the European intelligentsia during the Enlightenment and later when France was so admired - but not to the English. But I really don't know much about linguistsics at all (sorry!) - this is just something I remember reading ages ago. PiCo 22:23, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

- Well, I'm not too knowledgeable in religious history, nor am I knowledgeable in respective religions in and out of itself (though I think compared to the average teenager outside Wikipedia I know a bit more because I like history/philosophy/etc. and reading about it), so I don't know if I'm allowed to critcize or comment your beliefs concerning that area. Even if I did, I would still respect yours. It seems silly to not get along with someone just because their beliefs are different, doesn't it? I'm a big fan of Tolkien, and though his and my beliefs differ, I still respect his and I would hate it if Hollywood or some sort creating an adaptation out of his books wrecked or went against his beliefs that is implemented throughout the story. E.g., as much as I love the film trilogy, I don't know if the scriptwriters that Faramir being able to refuse (or overcome, depending on one's interpretation) the temptation of the Ring was tied in with Tolkien's belief that Grace could overcome all sin. —Mirlen 19:10, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Edit buttons[edit]
Hi CesarB. You have been recommended to me as the person who could answer this question: Where in MediaWiki can I add the buttons that normally appear above the edit box, such as the one that adds the signature? - They are added on the skin-specific JavaScript. The extra buttons currently added on the English Wikipedia are at MediaWiki:Monobook.js (search for mwCustomEditButtons); the code which does all the work is common/wikibits.js (common to all skins and all projects). If even the default ones are not showing, check if you have the edit toolbar enabled in your preferences. --cesarb 15:59, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation, CesarB. I checked what you mentioned, and found that I do have the edit bar selected in my preferences, but it still doesn't show up. I looked at the code you mentioned also, and while I can somewhat understand the code (I've had some minor programming experience a long time ago), and I can even find where the redirect button is added, I can't tell how to fix my problem. There are several things at the end of the initial long list in Monobook.js here that are not present on the projects I'm working on, but I don't think I need all of them. - I tried going to both and editing while not logged in (on the Main Page itself; I didn't save any changes), and the toolbar does appear and does work for me. Unfortunately, I have no idea why it's not working for you. You should ask other users of these wikis if the problem happens for them; if it doesn't appear for you even when not logged in, but does appear for other users of these wikis, I'd suspect something odd going on with either your computer (probably an adblocker or antivirus) or your connection (a proxy, perhaps even a transparent proxy, probably doing ad blocking or virus filtering). --cesarb 01:40, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Disambiguation link fixing one-day contest[edit]
I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. - I removed the proposed deletion tag, stopping this deletion attempt but the article is still likely to be deleted via the WP:AFD process as non-notable.
